when using a router your dsl connection is "always on" unless you decide to power off the router.

Broadcom is the brand name of the wired network adapter that you sue to connect thru your DSL connection to the internet. Try a System Restore to a point before you accidently deleted the icon.
Start>All Programs>System Tools>System Restore and follow the prompts.

I believe "Broadcom" is a brand name which may refer to:
* the piece of hardware and / of
* software used to control the hardware
As hardware, to say you want the connection without Broadcom is like saying you want to drive to the grocery store without the volvo. "Broadcom" hardware is the vehicle you ride in.
Generally as far as hardware, Windows XP is self-healing and when you shut down the system and start it up again, Windows goes out and finds and fixes all that it can.
As far as the software side (if any), Windows XP has a fall-back position, so even if the software goes away, there may be ways to use plain configuration steps to have the functionality anyway.
If you do Start | Run and gather the information from
IPCONFIG /ALL
it may help.
You can get back out of that Black screen by typing
EXIT
press Enter
