waltz.co,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The part is an Actiontec 10/100 LAN + 56K modem Combo Card.

The 3Com modem/NIC is the 3CN3AC1556 and also with a B on the end.  They haven't been in production for over a year, but google the part number and you will find them still for sale - I just got one a month ago.

Bob,

I have a similar problem with my modem all a sudden. I have the Inspiron 8000 and have 5 modems for this laptop. It came with the AuctionTec DP/6158U. Now all a sudden it will logon at best 19,6. I have tested everything including 2 other Dell laptops with this modem and they connect fine on the same line. Once I installed the 3com mini pci 10/100 Lan +56k and it didn't work well as it did not want to disconnect. I have an ActionTec mini Pci combo 10/100 +56k DP/N 04G889 REV A01. Can I use this modem and if so what driver should I install? There are all kinds of drivers listed under my I-8000. If not what has happened to my connection speed? I installed the new driver 830 and wonder if this has messed up my modem?

Bob,

Ran the test and it shows 19,200. But using the same phone line same location with 2 other Dell laptops it shows 28,800. I have all the windows updates already as I keep them updated. My problem with getting the lates drivers is there are too many options and I cannot find the correct driver for this modem. It appears to be modem600.exe but have installed that and it does no good. This problem just started 4 days ago. At this point I see no options left. Like I wrote, I have several other modems I can try but again cannot find the exact driver I need for each modem. Just too many driver options there for my laptop and none match the exact modem  want to install even if I use the Dell part number.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Try the following:

  • You should check the line by using a fspeed test on the modem.
  • Update the modem drivers by using the latest from the Downloads tab (above).
  • Visit the Windows update site to make sure your system is running the latest operating system patches.

Dave,

The driver that goes with the service tag listed in your profile is here.

Bob,

Thank you. I will go get it but I have a feeling it is the driver I have installed now. I will let you know how it comes out.

Use the Lucent 8.30 driver linked below, also the Intel 8255x linked driver for the NIC half of that card.  Run ltremove.exe form the Start - Run prompt to remove the old driver before loading the 8.30 driver.  Also make sure you are using a Dell audio driver before loading the modem driver.  With your modem and 3Com experiences, it sounds like Windows is really confused.  You could boot to the Safe Mode and go to the Device Manager and remove all ethernet adapters and all modems then load the new drivers.

John,

Thanks for the reply but the modem that came with this Laptop is just a modem and not the combo so there is no ethernet adapters installed. I gave up on this modem and installed the 3com combo modem and now it's working great.

Thanks anyway.
