ActiveX error when I use resource cd
My whole goal is to get my Internet working. I have a Dimension 8300 and I just got a new modem/router (Gateway VersaLink ADSL Wireles Westell) from Verizon to replace our malfunctioning modem. I pop the software cd in and later it tells me that it did not detect a NIC and that we should purchase one if we were to continue installation. So, I purchase a NIC (WG311 54Mbps Wireless PCI adapter) from Dell. It came in two days and then I call Dell for a technician so he or she can walk me through installation of the NIC. The first person I get told me that we should have a integrated NIC already installed. So we go to the device manager and discover two yellow question marks on Ethernet controller and some other device. The tech then says to put in out Dell Resource cd so we can get the drivers going. I pop in the Resource cd and then I get a error message #427 or something saying that ActiveX could not create file or something and that I should reinstall this and then try again. So I go to find ActiveX on Add/Remove programs and it's not there. I get another tech and then another tech and we tried everything from intalling things manually to looking for ActiveX to downloading drivers form Dell with our wonky connection. The last thing the tech instructed me to do is go to another computer and download and burn the drivers onto a disc and then try again. He said we should be fine. I just now downloaded all the drivers and I guess I'll use them but I've been reading threads about my kind of problem and it's about the Chip Set drivers. I'm wondering what to do. Do I say "scew it" and install our new NIC and forget about the integrated NIC or do I install these Dell network drivers and Chip Set drivers first?

Here's my "two cents worth"...I'd install the chipset drivers and get the integrated adapter working. It's best to have a working Ethernet adapter in a machine.
The WG311 is a PCI wireless adapter, though. So if you're planning to add wireless to the 8300, and didn't have a PCI or USB based wireless adapter before, you need it. If you just want the Ethernet integrated adapter to work, try installing the chipset drivers. The WG311 won't replace the onboard Ethernet adapter. It adds wireless.
As to why the Resource CD generates that error - I don't know, but it's probably related to OS/Internet Explorer security settings. I'd suggest working on that one in the Software board for your operating system. There may be other symptoms of security setting problems related to ActiveX, or it might be an ActiveX version problem.
