Adding my Computer to Macintosh Network

I am trying to set up my computer.  Here is the set up: there are ~10 Macintosh computers running (at minimum) OSX, all with ethernet cards.  All the ethernet cables go to a Mac Server running Jaguar.  I have a new computer.  I have a network card.  I plugged my ethernet cable into my computer, but I cannot get onto the internet.  What am I missing?  What else must I do?  Thank you.

neterno,

It would be helpful to know what model of PC you have and what its operating system is.  Assuming a new Dell Dimension running WinXP (since you posted in this forum), out of the box the PC is network ready.  Provide more information about your network.  Is there a router and what make and model is it?  What is providing DHCP functions on the network?

Check to see if you are getting an IP address when you are plugged into the network.  From a Command Prompt enter ipconfig /all and post the results.

You are going to need to add the Apple Talk protocol to be able to communicate on the Apple Network.  If you are just trying to get an IP Address from that network (presuming there is a router on it), the standard Microsoft suite of protocols (TCP/IP) should let you out.

neterno,

My new Dell and old Mac running OS 8.1 are each ethernet-connected in standard fashion directly to a Netgear DSL router. The DSL internet connection is immediately available in this way. So if all you want to do is connect to the internet, you can do so easily by connecting your ethernet cable directly to the router. Then create the connection via Start > Control Panels > Network Connections, then under Network Tasks on the left side of the window select "Create a new connection" and follow the prompts.

I'm told it's easy to network PCs with Macs running recent versions of Mac OS. But I can't testify to that, since the version I'm running is so old. I haven't yet been successful at networking my Dell with Mac OS 8.1 on my own without turning to third-party software for help. With your new Mac OS, you should be successful without such software. But if it comes down to it, you can try PC MACLAN from Miramar (http://www.miramar.com). Today I downloaded and tried their trial version and was totally amazed with the ease of it. Within just 1 minute of launching I found myself logged onto my Mac from my Dell ans was copying files from the Mac over to the Dell. I haven't bought the software yet (about $190.00, I think) and will resist doing so for so long as I hold out hope of accomplishing the networking without it.

I hoped that adding AppleTalk protocol would solve my problems networking XP with Mac OS 8.1. However, googling for "AppleTalk protocol XP" returned a Microsoft article stating that it was discontinued with XP.
