They use Win98SE and NetBUI. Can anyone help me with instructions on how to do this without wrecking the wireless connection I have now? I figure I have to somehow install NetBUI on the Inspiron (?).

I'd be very surprised if there are any wireless routers that handle NetBEUI (that's the correct spelling of this obsolete network protocol). Are you sure they're not using NetBIOS over TCP?

It's possible to install NetBEUI on XP. I think it's in the "valueadd" directory on the CD. I've read reports that it doesn't work very well, and that the version that shipped with Windows 2000 can be installed, and works better.

You're correct that it would be disruptive for your home network if you had to install NetBEUI because of your office setup. Nothing impossible, just messy, since you'd need NetBEUI bound to "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" and to "Client for Microsoft Networks" either in place of or in addition to TCP/IP.

Let's hope it's really NetBIOS over TCP!

Jim!

Thanks for your reply.  The do use NetBEUI.  However, I would be using a cable connection.  What I'd like to do is set up and alternate network connection with all the requisite settings for that office and simply switch between them - one wireless, one wired.

Interestingly, our home office computers (aside from the Inspiron) run Win98SE and the laptop fits into the network just fine - we set up our Dell 2300 as an access point and plugged it into our D-Link router/print server.

Did I read correctly that the version of NETBEUI on the Win2000 disk is better that that on the WinXP disk?  I don't have access to Win2000 - perhaps it's downloadable from MS...

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks

Stephen

OK, that's better! That way, the wired connection can be configured to include NetBEUI in its bindings (or maybe exclusively NetBEUI, if that's what's being used), and the wireless connection can continue to use NetBIOS over TCP, as it is now.

Someone mentioned that in another thread, but I haven't had any luck finding the reference. Looking in other places besides the Dell Forums, I found  this "tip", which includes a link for downloading the Win2K files for NetBEUI, and confirms trouble with the XP NetBEUI files. The article sounds very credible.

Here's Microsoft's article about  setting up NetBEUI for XP.
