All modems are not created equals. There are two types external and internal. The external types has its own power suppy and uses a serial port and cable to run. There are two internal types a winmodem and a data modem. http://www.fact-index.com/w/wi/winmodem.html
I like and have used external modems for a long time. The only draw back is to remember to shut them off. I usually purchase USR products. Dell sells an hardware modem for about $73.00 . I would suggest you purchase an external modem. Dell sells a USR for $50.00. All you need to purchase is a serial cable.

A modem may be Data/Fax or Data/Fax/Voice. You need the latter if you want to use the modem as an answering machine of make phone calls via your computer.
In additions, there are three main types of modems. Hardware or Controller-based modems, Controllerless or WinModems, and SoftModems. See this post for further discussion.
