Attach Hard Drive to Network Printer?

I need to buy a network printer, i.e. one with an Ethernet port.  Can I plug an external hard drive into the printer's USB port and see the drive on the network?  If I want both a network printer and a network drive, can I combine them somehow, or am I gonna need to buy two separate items that each have an Ethernet plug?

Thanks

No you cannot network a hard drive through a printer.  A hard drive needs to be connected to a computer in order to be accessed, even across a network.

lorentheodore,

Use Google and search for "network attached storage."  One example is the HD-H250LAN LinkStation.  This device is a 250GB hard drive that attaches to the local LAN via ethernet.  The "computer" is built into the device.  It also has an internal print server, so you can connect a printer.  But make sure your printer is supported by the print server before you make a comittment.  It's all controlled by the NAS firmware.

A network drive with a print server sounds cool.  Does this mean I could connect a printer with a USB interface, rather than spend the extra money for a printer with Ethernet?  I don't understand making sure the printer is supported by the print server.  Does a print server inside a network drive not allow for installing drivers like a regular computer would?
Thanks

lorentheodore,

"Does this mean I could connect a printer with a USB interface"  --  Yes, provided the NAS device you decide on has a print server and will support the connection interface you require (USB or parallel.)  In my experience print servers are an imperfect technology.  Most printers should work fine, but there's always a chance of incompatibility.  So do your homework and try to make sure your printer is compatible.  Google will be your friend.  Or make sure you can return the equipment if there is a compatibility problem.  If the printer is a multi-function type most print servers will not support any function beyond printing.
