?Basic Connection Question Vostro 1700 Connecting to Internet

I am not a "technical" computer person, just basic.   I am getting my Vostro 1700 notebook tomorrow (my first laptop experience).   Currently have a  desktop pc at home with broadband internet connection via my local cable company.   I know my Vostro comes with a Dell Wi-Fi Mini card,  but will I need to get router to connect to the internet using my existing service (Insight Communications)?   The desktop will stay for family/at home use, but I would like to use the laptop to connect when traveling, out of the house etc.   Not sure what else I need to get.

If you want to connect to your existing service at home, you will need a wireless router.  Nearly all wireless routers on the market today have 4 ethernet ports, so you will connect your cable modem to the router, connect your desktop computer to the router by an ethernet cable, and your new Vostro will be able to connect to the router and thus the internet by wireless.   Note that this type of WiFi network has a range of about 300 feet under ideal conditions.  So this service will not be avaiable to you while traveling.   On the other hand, you will be able to connect at wireless hotspots, such as are provided by many cafes, hotels, libraries, campgrounds, and airports.  Some are free, some charge a fee.

If you want wireless nearly everywhere (there is no such thing as everywhere), you will need a different type of wireless card and will have to subscribe to a broadband wireless service such as provided by companies like AT&T (formerly Cingular), Verizon, or Sprint.  Each of these services uses a different type of wireless card and these are not the standard cards that come with computers.
