Basic questions on wireless.....

Just purchased a Inspiron 2200 with a: Dell Wireless 1370 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps).

What do I need to go wireless?  Just a router??

What is the PC Slot used for?  Do I need to buy something that goes in this slot??

I have a cable connection and Dell Desktop.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

The PC slot could be used of network cards, wireless network cards, modems, or a variety of other devices.  Since you ordered your computer with a 1370 card, you need nothing else for your computer.  The 1370 card goes in a MiniPCI slot and you have a built in modem and ethernet network card.

Assuming that your cable modem is capable of connecting by ethernet, then all you need is a wireless router.  You will connect the Internet port on the router to the ethernet port on the cable modem.  You will connect the ethernet port on the Dell desktop to one of the LAN ports on the router, and your new I 2200 will connect to the modem through wireless through the router.

Good morning Steve and thank you so much for your quick reply!

I'm a newbie when it comes to wireless, networks, etc.  But, it is starting to make some sense.

Now a question on the network card.  If I were to get a wireless network card, I would be able to acess everything on my desktop computer with the laptop - is that true?

The wireless card you already have in your laptop plus a router is all you'll need. Just make sure that the router you get supports the same protocols as your interal wireless card (i.e. b/g).

As to accessing stuff on your desktop over your wireless connection. Only files/folders that you've specified as "shared" on the desktop will be able to be seen and accessed over your wireless connection (wireless LAN).  Also, your desktop and laptop will need to be assigned the same LAN name (right-click My Computer, select Properties and then the Computer Name tab). To make a file or folder shared, right-click that file/folder and select share. You may need to play around abit with the Windows firewall, however, before being able to see the files/folders on the wireless LAN.
