rmp0012002,

If your parents already have a wireless DSL setup, you shouldn't need another router. You'll need to make sure the security settings of your 2200 match the settings of their wireless router - SSID, WEP or WPA keys, for example. If their setup restricts wireless connections by MAC address, the MAC address of your 2200 will need to be entered into their router's "permitted" list.

I wrote that wrong. The verizon dsl my parents have is not wireless, just a box on the wall. So I would just have to hook a router to that box I think? Would I need special software on my laptop or it will pick up verizons network?

rmp0012002,

If the Verizon DSL modem only supports one connection at a time, you'll need to purchase a wireless router. I think Steve/("volcano11") covered this in another thread you started about the same topic.

You won't need any Verizon software on your laptop to communicate. Your wireless card will obtain its IP address from the new wireless router. That device, and only that device, will connect to Verizon's network through the DSL modem.

The router's WAN side may need to be set up to log into Verizon's ISP network - I had to do this when I set up my daughter's Verizon DSL in D.C.

Thanks Jim for the information. Just have to figure out which router to purchase. Is there somewhere on the dell site that shows which router would match up with each card?

Rob,

We've been using the Linksys WRT54g very successfully with an SBC ADSL modem. John's had specific experience with Verizon setups, and may have further advice for you. Keep in mind that there's no reason to buy a wireless router from Dell if you can obtain a better price elsewhere. Buying one made by the vendor that makes the wireless adapter may avoid fingerpointing between the two vendors' support organizations, but since Intel doesn't make wireless routers, that's not an option in this case. As far as the wireless side goes, as long as the router is compliant with the 802.11 b/g specifications, it should interoperate.

Besides, as you've already discovered, wireless support is quite good right here! :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks. Who is John, I have more questions? I noticed the only open jack on the Verizon unit is usb. I read that I would just need to plug the router into one of the usb outlets on the computer itself. Trying to find the dsl manual to see what it says about routers.

rmp0012002,

"John" is " johnallg", who also replied in this thread.

There's a problem if the DSL modem only has a USB connector. The problem is that it's very difficult to find routers that support USB connections! Can you perhaps convince Verizon to exchange your current DSL modem for one that supports Ethernet connections?

Hi John. To set up my wireless, would the ethernet cable out of the Verizon box connect to the router, the router would then be connected by another ethernet cable to the desktop giving both the desktop and laptop dsl access. Is this correct?

Yes.  Also, whenever you are changing any settings on the wireless router, use a wired connection.

Thanks again. Just placed the order for a linksys router. No software is required for the router or laptop? And when the laptop searches for a network it should pick up the router?

No software to set up the router is needed, you can log into the router to do any settings changes.  The User Manual will explain.  And the second question, that is the ideal situation.  It usually works that way.  Have XP with SP2 and let Windows control the connections, and delete the Intel ProSet Wireless Utility - just keep the driver for the 2200 card.

Dell ships fast so I might receive it today. The desktop is running verizon with msn, will I need to put msn on my laptop to make it work or will I just be able to click on internet explorer to gain access?

Thanks,
Rob

Just clicking IE would do it.

Thanks for the help. Once I found out that I had to go to the Linksys site to get the router configured and made the network disk everything went smoothly.
