I am unsure.. but this is one thing to try...

I am guessing your modem driver is 3.5.24 or 3.5.25 (look in Modem Properties through the Control Panel). If it is, check and see if Modem on Hold (again, check in Modem Properties) is enabled. If so try unchecking that box. AOL does not support MOH, but the modem does.

I don't know if that will help or not, but worth a try.

I do find it odd that you can connect, but then AOL checks your modem. To me, that does not seem right....

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will check the "modem on hold" box.

This is a really strange problem.  Last night, I reinstalled the BCM drivers and also used the "Modem Helper" under /Programs to check the modem.  Everything passed.  It even said that if there are any further problems, it is with the phone line or the ISP.  AOL tech help has been pretty miserable (six calls now!).  They have outsourced tech help to India and they are very nice and gracious people - just not too knowledgeable.
