blocking sharing wireless network

I've been using a wireless connection on my computer to get on the internet.  But my roomate bought a wireless card for his computer and has been using my connection without my permission.  He connects to the internet and I've realized because my connection gets really slow.  Is there a way to prevent him getting online or block him or something?

If you are using a router, you can enable MAC address filtering.  You will have to enter the MAC address of each network card that can use the network.  Any computer that does not have the MAC address entered into the filter will not be allowed on the network.

Which router do you have?  Do you still have the manual that came with your router.  The virus problem is separate and should be posted in the Virus/Spyware Information and Removal forum.

I have the NETGEAR router.  it didn't come with a manual.  just a slip for installation.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/main.asp check manuals, select product category and product. Unless it has been changed, most routers use address: http://192.168.1.1/ for the router setup. If your router's userid/password is not set to its default or you don't know it, or it has been compromised then you can do a hard reset of the router - refer to its manual. I recommend selecting a password other than the default. Some routers do not use a userid (it is left blank). If your does use the userid, I recommend selecting a userid other than the default. This will help keep others from breaking into your router and locking you out or adding their MAC addresses without your knowledge.

Click on the link, enter setup

  1. enter admin userid/password (see the Netgear manual for your router)
  2. click on tab for MAC address filtering
  3. enable filtering
  4. add the MAC (a.k.a.: physical address) of your wireless card.
  5. save settings (the router may then cycle itself)
  6. exit browser

Your router will now limit access to only those wireless cards that are present in its list of valid MAC addresses.
