Blue screen - Actiontec MD56ORD MDC Modem

hello, i have an inspiron, when i try to connect to internet, my system crashes and the only thing i see is a blue screen which says that HSFHWICH.SYS is the responsable. I have read some posts in here. I installed the latest driver for my modem but i still have the problem. Do i have to first delete the files of the old driver? Do i have to reinstall win XP? do i have to buy a new modem?

Make sure the volume slider is up - somewhere in the Modem properties area.  Also if it is, then boot to the Windows Safe Mode (F8 while WIndows is just starting up) and then go to the Device Manager and delete all modem entries, reboot normally, and see if it works then.  Lastly you can use Hyper Terminal and when connected to the phone line, type ATH1 and see if you hear dialtone.

Thanks, i did what you said. I uninstall the modem in safe mode, then windows installed the modem again in normal mode, then I started the hyperteminal and I created a connection then I typed ATH0, but no sound, but there was an ok on the screen, i typed ATH0 again and then the blue.

I installed an application called modemTest wich probes the connection speed, it makes some test about the modem, but in the middle of test the blue screen again.

How do i know if my modem is still usefull?

yes, i have no problems with the audio card, besides i don't have any trouble with controllers (forced hardware), and all my devices are well installed.

Are you using a Dell Audio driver?  The "modem" is actually the cpu and sound card working together.

Getting a BSOD concerning the driver for your modem points to a software problem, not a hardware problem.  That said, if you want to try a different modem, look at this PCTel modem or this or this.

You can disable it in the Device Manager or remove it from the notebook, easy to do.
