Blue tooth wireless connection causing computer slow down.
I have a Dell Insprion 9300
2mhz processor
1 Gb RAM
Panda antivirus and firewall.
Issue: When saving a word/excel DOC or attaching a Doc to email it is either very slow or times out and can not complete the process. Whether connected up to home wireless or work.
PF Usage seemed a little high 450 - 550MB
No CPU spikes.
Testing:
-Went into msconfig and shut down all start up processes which included the wireless adapter.
Result: issue resolved. PF usage down a little but not significantly.
-Reenabled all (restarts inbetween enabling and disabling)
Issue came back
-Disabled all and only enable wireless connection
PF usage down mid 300s and no CPU spikes
Issue returned.
Seems there are no other problems accept doing a save as on a document or trying to attach to email.
Issue has to be the wireless connection since the PF usage is decreased and there are no CPU spikes when just the wireless connection is disabled. The issue resolves when it is disabled in any scenario.

This is a known consequence of recent Microsoft Windows update and if you search a bit on Dell Talk (or even google) you will find the Microsoft fix, which involves making an edit to the Registry. I have already done it on two computers on the campus I support.

Before making any registry change, I first EXPORT to file named 20060428
Then, after I finish, I do a new EXPORT to new file named 20060428fix

Thanks!
Wasn't able to find that prior to posting on Google but will look for the resolution on the Dell chats.

The following is the resolution from that article.

RESOLUTION
• Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software. The MS06-015 (908531) (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx) security update includes a "white list"; VERCLSID.EXE will not scan any extension that appears on this list. Adding the HP shell extension corrects the problem. Manually edit the registry: 1. Log on to the computer with an account with administrator privileges.
2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
4. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
5. Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:
{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401
6. Set the Data of this value to 1
7. Close the Registry Editor.
8. Use Task Manager to end the Verclsid.exe process or restart the computer.
Note: If other third-party COM controls or shell extensions are determined to cause this issue, the same method must be used to add the appropriate shell extension.
• VERCLSID.EXE process flagged by Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. Kerio Personal Firewall Users can configure Kerio to allow VERCLSID.EXE to execute without prompting.

well I guess the issue is that "you must know the registry keys that correspond to the shell extensions." if this is not NVIDIA or HP products causing the issue. This gets into an area I'm not to comfortable with I'd be ok following directions to Reg Edit but I would have no clue what the registry keys were for the wireless product.
Was the issue you dealt with caused by the wireless connection or something else?
Thanks for any further assistance.
At least I know what the issue is now.

Getting to a website by typing it in is not an issue.
And testing shows that my issue is directly related to the wireless connection.
With all start up applications either shut down or turned on the wireless on or off determines whether the issue exists or not.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks.

Both my systems were desktop and no wireless involvement. The combination of being unable to 'Save As' as well as not being able to go to a web location that you yourself type into IE ('not responding') is unrelated to Bluetooth or wireless but only the aftermath of a Windows update (which could have been applied automatically).

The same when attaching to an email. Where is the file or document located when you attach?
If Word is running in your email program, then you can CLEAR the checkbox in Options that says to use Word to edit your email messages (or compose).
Do you have Adobe Acrobat Pro (which requires Macros to be enabled in Office programs)?
Look in Task Manager for a process called Desk95
If it is there, then end that task and do a search on the hard drive for Desk95.exe which you will then need to rename (I change extension to XEX).
Also, disable and STOP the services: Computer Browser, DNS, Messenger, IPsec
