Bluetooth adapter self installation/upgrade not fully functional

I have just added an internal Dell bluetooth adapter (to avoid having to use a USB device) to my company supplied Dell Latitude E6420. (BT adapted was not specified as an option, unfortunately).

All seemed well expect that when pairing a device (say BlackBerry or TV), the device appears momentarily as being attached, this disappears again. I strongly suspect that as well as installing the physical adapter, I also need to add a suitable driver. Problem is: which driver do I need? (oh... and how?)

The BT adapter was provided via the Dell website and came in a Dell box. (I had to buy the small ribbon connector too).

Any hints, tips would be appreciated: I have trawled through countless items in an attempt at self help, but having failed to find anything much more than the standard driver update sites, I am now hoping that someone out there with can give me some good advice.

Hoping this is in the right forum...

Thanks in anticipation...

Rick -- it worked, thank you. I needed to install R288120 which is the driver for the Dell 375 adapter. Everything now works beautifully. Thanks for your pateinec and dedication while I fumbled my way through. Got there in the end!

Right click on the top one and make sure it's enabled.

Also look in the BIOS and does it show you can enable it in the...

Start, control panel, windows mobility center?

Aldeburgh,

When you installed the bluetooth adapter, did you install the software first, then shut down the computer. Unplug it from the wall and remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any power left in the system?

The adapter is showing in the system information but states that it's disconnected.

Do you have the make and model of the bluetooth adapter?

What do you see in the device manager? While there, in the top, do you see bluetooth radios? If yes, double click on it, then click on power management. Uncheck the box, allow Windows to turn off this device to save power.

Rick,

Thanks again for your guidance.

When I got the box, I powered the computer off, unplugged and removed the battery but did not do the 30 second step. More to the point I added the hardware before installing any software (nothing came with the adapter by the way). I must admit to thinking "plug and play", ie taking the lazy way out.....

I don't know the make or model other than to say it was a genuine Dell part purchased from a Company called Upgrade Options in the UK. (I was referred to them by Dell when inquiing about the possibility of retrofitting BT).

I have two BT Radios in Device Mgr: Generic Bluetooth Adapter and Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.

Have now done the power management step you suggested.

I'll have another go at pairing up -- see what happens...

Thanks

Rick,

Right click on the top one and make sure it's enabled. Done: was enabled, but tried disabling, re-booting and re-enabling -- made no difference

Also look in the BIOS and does it show you can enable it in the... Done: All Wireless options were enabled

Start, control panel, windows mobility center? Tried without success:  I could not get to any options for Bluetooth as per your screenshot -- only first two rows shown...

I have reverted to using a plug in BT adapter (Belkin) to eliminate any peripheral problems -- my BT travel mouse and BlackBerry both paired OK. So I'm basically back to the belief that some drivers for the internal Dell BT adapter must be installed. I will go back to the hardware supplier (Upgrade Options) to ask for their help.

If you have anything else to suggest I would be grateful, meanwhile thank you for your endeavours and advice. Much appreciated.

Aldeburgh,

Go to Drivers & Downloads and enter your model. Try downloading Dell Control point and see if you can then have the options I have. Since a Latitude is a business laptop, you might not have the same options as I do. I use Dell Quickset and I don't see that listed.

Wow.. That's all I can say.  I'm one of 200 corporate I.T. guys who only deals with Dell and HP's, and this exact issue (BT375, Latitude 6420 and Win7 x64) has been kicking all of us. We have tried every driver until this one. Still having some issues but this one seems promising. Have to reimage and start over. Will post results.

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

I have seen members make images and the drivers do not get installed in the correct order causing problems. The desktop/notebook system utility(if applicable) and the chipset drivers need installed first, or the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

You may want to make the image of the basic installation, then start with installing the drivers in the correct order. Windows 7 is usually very easy to install drivers. If you use the Vista(or XP) drivers in the Vista(or XP) Compatibility mode in most cases the drivers will install with no problems.

Steve,

Usually on a Dell, unless it had the upgrade options(disk came with product key attached), if the computer came with the operating system installed, if you use a Dell OEM disk, the disk gets the product key from the motherboard and no product key is needed.

If the recovery partition is still intact, it's the easiest route to take, as long as all files and folders are backed up. Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

Manual method is How To Restore or Reinstall Microsoft® Windows® on a Dell™ Computer

If you have a Windows 7 system, if you made the Windows 7 - IMPORTANT Windows 7 Backup Disks to create you can use Restoring Your Dell Computer to Original Factory Installation with Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0

LOL.. My laptop is being reimaged right now. I tried to install the above listed driver and it choked, telling me that it could not install the drive, had to rollback, and then Windows updates installed when it tried to reboot. To add more salt, Win7 came up and said I was no longer Validated (presumably because of the number of times I changed the bluetooth stack in a week? ). I clicked the link to validate, and of course, since we validate through Active Directory, all should have been great..   ehhhhnnn..   no go. She went down and refused to come back up.

So once I get her back, I'll try again to install the correct driver listed above...  And I'll see what happens. Probably had locked files from a previous uninstall or reinstall of another BT driver...

Steve
