My computer is an inspiron 1564 with Dell 1397 minicard. I found that it has bluetooth capability, but am unable to detect or connect to my mobile phone.
I have spent a lot of time trying to get it to work, but I cant find answers

Hi
Are you able to search devices using the bluetooth application on the inspiron 1564?
Put your phone in 'Discoverable' state, this option is found under bluetooth options in the phone.

The problem seems to be that the computer cannot detect the bluetooth phone in discoverable mode. It appears to be searching, but never detects the phone.

These are the points one must keep in mind while trying to add a bluetooth device.
1) The device you are trying to add should be discoverable mode.
2) If the device was added earlier, it must be removed in order for the system to detect the same device again. Right click on the bluetooth icon next to the time and click on ' Show bluetooth devices' , remove any device u see here. Unless u have other bluetooth devices this window should be empty.
3) Make sure your bluetooth device is enabled on the laptop and is in discoverable mode too.
How exactly are u trying to search for the mobile ?. is your cell phone able to detect the laptop?

Which OS are you using?
Uninstall the bluetooth software from your system and install the updated one from support site.

Dell Wireless 1397 is NOT a bluetooth card. Its only a WLAN Card.
To know if you do have a bluetooth card installed.
check in device manager, you should have 'Bluetooth Radios'
If you dont have 'Bluetooth Radios' mentioned and not sure if u have a bluetooth card installed on your system then install the following bluetooth software
Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Module

We need to check if there is a bluetooth card installed in your system.
Step one:
Go to BIOS , (F2 when starting the system) check under network adapter options, see if the Bluetooth adapter is 'Enabled'
Step two:
go to support.dell.com, on the left hand side click on warranty status, enter your service tag and the click on 'Original Configuration' tab, see if the bluetooth card is mentioned in the order details.

My apologies for the late reply.
Get in touch with Tech Support and they will help you out with the same, if Bluetooth card is not available on the system they will help you purchase one compatible for your system.
