TrueBlue1981,

Did you install/reinstall the operating system recently?

Hit the Windows Key and the R keys at the same time. Type

systeminfo.txt

REMOVE THE PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here. (Preferred)

or an ipconfig /all log and maybe it will reveal something.

TrueBlue1981,

I do not dee any bluetooth adapter listed.

Places to look to see if it's enabled.

When you installed the adapter, did you install the drivers first, Suntdown the computer. Unplug the ac adapter. Remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Plug the computer back in and start it. If the adapter is there, the new hardware wizard will find it.

What do you see in the device manager?

Hm-hm... therein lies the problem. Windows only sees the Bluetooth adapter as a USB Composite Device in Device Manager, hence why System Info isn't displaying it.

I installed the Bluetooth adapter first, and had Windows 7 install the drivers automatically, which I assumed would be a simple thing to do... but now I'm having these issues with it.

Windows just will not recognize it as a Bluetooth device... only a generic USB Composite Device. I've removed all USB Composite Drivers and allowed it to reinstall them... but that doesn't work at all

And as soon as the Bluetooth adapter is plugged in, internet activity slows to a crawl (and will often timeout), and if I restart the laptop, it no longer connects to my router wirelessly (it won't even SEE the router) until I've removed the Bluetooth adapter. Then internet is immediately back up and running.

It seems as though Windows MUST know what it is, since the Bluetooth LED starts flashing, but Windows doesn't report the device as an actual Bluetooth device.

And unfortunately, the fix you suggested didn't work, and Device Manager still doesn't display any Bluetooth devices.

TrueBlue1981,

You upgraded this system to Windows 7, correct?

The Notebook system utility and the chipset drivers need installed first, or the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Since I do not see any Windows 7 64-bit drivers, try using the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista(Try Vista SP2) Compatibility mode

That is correct. I did upgrade this laptop to Windows 7.

Well, I downloaded the Bluetooth driver from the link you provided. Unfortunately, it still refuses to work. Whenever I install the Bluetooth drivers using software (not downloaded from Windows Update) it asks me to turn on the Bluetooth radio using Fn+F2 or the Radio Switch... Fn+F2 has no effect, and the radio switch does nothing either, as a result, the installation can't continue.

The main Setup.exe file in the downloaded drivers shows me the Fn+F2 message. The Setup.exe file int he Win64 folder does absolutely nothing, and the Setup.exe file in the Win32 folder installs the software, but has no effect.

And the Bluetooth module still stops me from browsing the internet, so I have to keep removing it in order to post on this forum.

So yeah.. Windows 7, my laptop.. or both.. simply refuse to detect this as a Bluetooth device, it just isn't happening. Maybe there is a problem with the Windows install? Or a problem with the Bluetooth module?

Either way, it just isn't working in my laptop... maybe the BT module isn't compatible?

TrueBlue1981,

The NOtebook system utility and the chipset drivers need installed first. With the combination of these two drivers, it tells what is attached to this system. If they are not installed first, it will not recognize most things that are attached. The network adapters are usually the first to be noticed, but it can include other things, like webcams, usb ports, etc.

Install the notebook system utility, then the chipset drivers and follow the list. See if the bluetooth adapter installs.

Rick...

Well, I am unable to install the Notebook system utility, as there is none for Windows Vista, and the Windows XP version won't install (even under Vista compatibility mode), so that has to be left out.

And I reinstalled the Chipset drivers, for which I have a newer version than on the website. I installed the Bluetooth adapter once again, but Windows still won't recognize it correctly, and I still have network issues once it's plugged in to the laptop.

All in all... I think I should buy a different Bluetooth adapter... I see drivers for a TrueMobile 355 adapter.. and I don't think this is a TM 355 adapter at all, so maybe that's the problem?

The FCC ID of my Bluetooth adapter is: PIW632500516610

The P/N is: UG748

The Revision is: A01

That info probably pointless, but I figured I'd include it anyway.

Thank you for the continued help.

TrueBlue1981,

The Dell MGX071, is this also known as the Dell XPS M1730?

If yes, try running the Dell Notebook System Software , Intel Mobile Chipset and the Ricoh R5C833 in the XP(maybe XP SP3) Compatibility mode

The download and install in the XP compatibility mode the following.

I did not see the drivers listed for the Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller(Maybe these will work. Broadcom BCM5784M LAN or better known as Broadcom Netlink Gigibit Ethernet (64-bit drivers)

Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR)

Dell QuickSet

This should get you online to be able to download the audio and vide drivers, if needed. Bluetooth should also work.

That is correct, yes.. it's the XPS M1730.

I am unable to run the Dell Notebook System Software, because it won't install, as it's for XP only. It won't even work when set to XP Compatibility. It just says "Setup cannot continue on this machine" and that's it.. installation stops.

I reinstalled the Chipset and Ricoh Chipset drivers (under XP compatibility) but to no avail. And the Ethernet drivers are indeed installed already, they are listed at the very bottom of the system info.

Wireless, Bluetooth and Quickset all reinstalled.... but alas... still nothing from the Bluetooth adapter.

Having a quick look, I did see some forums here stating by some users, that the Bluetooth software didn't work correctly with Windows 7, since the M1730 was never given proper Windows 7 compatibility. Could this be the cause?

TrueBlue1981,

Sde if you have the latest BIOS. I know some of the BIOS will not allow Windows 7 to install. Look in the BIOS and under wireless adapter, does the Bluetooth adapter show? If yes, is it enabled?

I do have the latest BIOS for the M1730 (A11). And I also checked the Bluetooth in the BIOS, and it was set to Enabled.

But.. as you can probably guess.. still no change with the Bluetooth adapter.. Windows STILL won't see it as a Bluetooth adapter.

Hi TrueBlue,

I have gone through the entire thread and see what the problem is. 32bit drivers can NEVER be installed for a 64bit Windows system.

As far the Model of your Bluetooth card goes its 'TrueMobile 350' also known as Dell Wireless 350.

Please follow the below steps accordingly

  • Remove any previously installed Bluetooth software from 'Programs and Features'
  • Restart the system
  • Download & install THIS

Let me know how this goes.

Hi Telson,

Thanks for the reply.

I removed all the Bluetooth software that was in the laptop, and downloaded the driver you provided. However, the driver hasn't helped. It's still doing the same things.

As soon as it's plugged in, connection to my wireless router is lost half the time, and I can't browse the internet properly. When installing the device, Windows still sees it as an Unidentified Device. Once it's installed, Windows sees it as a USB Input Device and a USB Composite device... not a Bluetooth device.

If I try to manually install the driver from an INF, it just tells me that there are no supported drivers in the folder.. or something to that effect.

I had to remove the Bluetooth adapter in order to post this, since internet connectivity is hit and miss when it's attached.

So yeah... so far, all this time... I still haven't been able to sort it out. I'm in the state of mind at the moment, to do a complete clean install of Windows 7, in case the original drivers Win7 installed are messing the installation up.

Other than that... I'm totally stumped.

The Link that was supplied is the 64bit version for your card.

I was hoping it wouldnt come to this, i have noticed that when an 'upgrade' of an OS is done, certain driver files just refuse to install. Instead they install as a USB composite device.

This has been observed under the following cases

  • Installation (Clean) of an OS on an existing already installed older OS or the same version (Without Formatting)
  • Upgrading an OS

May i ask how an upgrade was performed ? If you have just received the 'Upgrade' disk then i am afraid we are out of options, else a 'Clean' installation of the OS is required else it would be a waste of time trying to get this working.
