Bluetooth

Hello,
I recently purchased an XPS M140 laptop which has a built in Dell 350 bluetooth wireless card in it.  I have a PALM Tungsten T5 handheld.  I have successfully configured them to do a hotsych.
My laptop has a wireless card which I use to access the internet.  I would like to be able to access this internet service on my handheld using bluetooth networking.
Reading up on internet I understand this is possible however I dont have the networking option under my bluetooth setting.  It's a Toshiba driver and options it has are File transfer, Image transfer, and Object push.  Can someone please help so I could get this to work?

I posted this msg yesterday on First time users but was advised to post it here.

I am a first time user of this service ... and all your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Out of my total ignorance (however, I do read a LOT on the Axim forums on Dell Talk) linking with Bluetooth (other than to ActiveSync) would involve having a mobile phone and the corresponding mobile phone (data?) service at about $50 extra a month and therefore would have nothing to do with your in-house wireless. Wireless and mobile phone access are not at all the same thing. I have heard that most recent notebooks have the ability to do EvDO (as an example) directly but this still involves a per-month charge for the "everywhere" mobile service to drive your hardware, whether notebook of PDA. Although it does not pertain directly, you may get some perspective by devouring www.aximsite.com

Thank you for your reply but that is not what I was trying to do.  I needed to be able to access internet on my palm using bluetooth while my laptop with internet serving as network spot without use of bluetooth cell phone.
I called Dell yesterday and after speaking to them for couple of hours with no resolution, I decided to use an external compusa bluetooth adapter I had.
I removed dell's bluetooth driver and installed the driver for external adapter which has all the profiles i needed - networking as well as audio.  After playing with it for a while, I got it networked so that now I can access internet on my palm anywhere in the house. Speed is great it connects at 700K.  One thing if anyone tries this, is that palm uses com7 serial port which i had little hard time setting up on laptop but finally got it to work.
Dell is to call me in next couple of days to tell me if there is any other driver with these capabilities that is compatible with internal bluetooth 350 card Is available, i am certain answer is no but we will see...
Thank you again

I read your post and you have the exact same set up that I have. You also had the exact same problem I currently have!

Can you provide me some more details on the compusa driver mod you made? I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous -- adequate to sort this out once I know the steps to follow.

Thanks much -- CK

Hello CK,

The CompUSA external Bluetooth adapter costs $34.99 http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=312330&pfp=SEARCH

Hopefully following instructions will help –

1)      Uninstall Dell Bluetooth Driver

Click control panel – Add/remove programs – remove Bluetooth drivers

2)      Reboot

After reboot, it may say found new hardware do you want to install drivers – cancel, also you will notice blue light that indicated your internal Bluetooth card is not lit.. GOOD

3)      Install CompUsa Bluetooth driver

Install drivers from CompUsa CD, here when it asks you about found new drivers do you want to install say yes (if it doesn’t find the drivers the first time, its not done copying from the CD hit back and let it search again)

4)      Reboot

After this reboot a green light in your external bluetooth adapter will flicker – its GOOD

5)      Setup Bluetooth on PDA

On your PDA go into Bluetooth change it to ON and discoverable. Leave your PDA powered on and plugged in because it takes a while to finish this and you don’t want to lose power in the middle.

6)      Setup Bluetooth on Laptop

After installing CompUsa software, it puts a Mybluetooth icon on desktop, click myblutooth  - click on view devices in range – it should find your PDA – click on my Bluetooth services (it will show whole bunch of things you could do with this new driver) – select my network access and  click on view modify configuration – General tab: type in the name of your LAPTOP (if you haven’t named your laptop, you can do so by right clicking MY COMPUTER) – Accessibility – check off box let other devices discover this computer, Allow : only devices listed below, and click on add device if your PDA is not listed already, if it is go onto next tab – Discovery: check off box look for other devices – Local services – there will be bunch of services listed here click click on network access check off box start automatically and choose option allow other devices to access internet/Lan via this computer hit ok, then click on add serial service (this adds a com port make sure you select COM7 ) Tungsten PDA only uses COM7 to hotsynch, hit ok and then back till you see your PDA listed again and option device setup wizard ,select option that says I want to find specific Bluetooth device and configure, click next, you should see your PDA, select it and click next you should see hotsynch and other services listed, click on check off hotsynch and select configure , check boxes start automatically and secure conncetion and select comport from the list (make sure you select COM7) and then finish.

7)      Change network config on Laptop

Go into control panel, network connections (you should see your Bluetooth and wireless connection) – right click wireless, properties, advanced, and check  box allow other network users to connect …., and select your Bluetooth network in the box below, ok … close all the windows on your laptop

8)      Create connections on PDA

Use section called Palm setup for sharing internet on http://www.whizoo.com/bt_setup/

If you are unable to follow write back and I will post detailed instructions like these for handheld

9)      Hotsync on PDA

Try hotsynch see if it works … it should

10)  Access internet on PDA

Try internet …..enjoy

If this does not work … and you wish to revert back, simply go into add remove, remove compusa Bluetooth driver… reboot…. Remove external adapter… and reinstall dell driver…

Sorry didn’t mean to write a novel…. But wanted to give you as much info as possible…

This is great! I live in the "backwoods" and do not have a CompUSA readily available -- will order on line today and run these directions when it arrives. Since this is a confirmed way of getting the palm & m140 to communicate...no desire to invent a new method.

One follow on question -- you left the dell 350 card inside or did you physically remove it?

More after I've run through this process with the new hardware.

Dell 350 bluetooth card is not physically removed.
Let us know how it works - Good luck
