Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller - Cannot Find Free Resources (Code 12)

I have a recent issue on my Dell Dimension C521 (running Windows Vista Home Basic, 32bit ) where the Broadcom driver will not function because of the following issue presented in the device status:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Steps I have taken to resolve:

1. Reviewed other devices and not observed any issues with them.
2. Checked for solutions using the option by the device driver but it did not find any.
3. Updated the driver to the latest version (4.60.0.0).
4. Disabled the driver and re-installed (after restarting).
5. Reformatted and re-installed Vista!

Despite all these actions the driver is still not functioning and does not allow me to access the web.

Any help gratefully received please.

MB-71,

When you reinstalled Vista, did you install the desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Your error code means...

Code 12

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. (Code 12)

Cause

This error can occur if two devices that are installed on your computer have been assigned the same I/O ports, the same interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel (either by the BIOS, the operating system, or both). This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device.

Recommended resolution

You can use the Troubleshooting Wizard in Device Manager to determine where the conflict is, and then disable the conflicting device.

Disable the conflicting device

  1. On the device Properties dialog box, click the General tab.
  2. Click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. The wizard asks you some simple questions and provides a solution to your problem based on the answers that you provide.
  3. Follow the resolution steps provided by the wizard to resolve the problem.

Hi Rick

Thank you for the detailed reply. In Vista I have the option to 'check for solutions' on the General tab but when I have done so previously it came back with no solutions found. I have just tried it again and it states 'could not load driver software' and then closes. I have restarted, reinstalled the software but the same problem occurs. I have had a look through the BIOS to see if I can see anything in there but no. No other device is showing with a problem so difficult to know which one is causing the problem. This driver is using PCI Bus 4, device 7, function 0.

Any other help very warmly received.

Many thanks, Matthew.

Matthew,

Disconnect all usb devices except the mouse and keyboard.

Download and install the Dell System Utilities, Install everything in the XP Compatibility mode Looks like Dell is ising the Xp drivers on the Vista system.

Then download and install the  AMD Processor Driver along with the nVidia SMBus.

Then install the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller.

This should get you online to download and install the rest of the drivers in order. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
