Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller Ping issues

Recently bought 34 Optiplex GX520s with the integrated Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller and boy am I having issues.

The random issue comes from different machines on different lan segments. I connect the GX520 (machine A) to the lan behind switch A and start a command prompt in Windows XP Pro. The IP address is configured via Windows 2003 Server DHCP and all information is verified as correct. The machine couldn't join the domain, so I worked my way up the network chain. I can ping local (127.0.0.1). I cannot ping the router. I cannot ping another LAN IP. I cannot get DNS resolution when pinging another host.

The randomness comes into play that I can take the machine A to switch B and everything works fine. I can try another machine (machine B) behind switch B and nothing works, same problem. If I move machine B to switch A, it works fine, all pings and can join the domain.

Anyone else have this type of wierd problems with broadcom NICs?

Tried that, didn't work.

The network switches are netgear 10/100 dumb switches and I'm sure they are having the problem you described, but I don't have the budget to upgrade them at this time. I've been told that tring to set the negotiation to dumb-switches is fruitless as well. I'm not going to say that is the rule, but on the machines in question it didn't work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

lawrenced1,

Are you running a gigabit network?  If not, the new NICs may be having trouble negotiating the speed with the switches.  First, make sure you are using the most current driver for the NIC.  Get it directly from Broadcom.  If you still have problems, see if this helps: Open Device Manager and then the properties of the Gigabit Controller.  Change the Link Speed and Duplex to 100Mbps Full Duplex.  Most likely you will find this on the Advanced tab, although different manufacturers drivers present this differently.  After changing Link Speed and Duplex, OK out and reboot.

Im having the same problem. I am able to pull an Ip, surf, use network printers but I cannot ping the device from other machines or view shared folders. I've updated the driver, did the reg edit but still no go. I've got over 100 units out there on various network and like you said its a hit miss with the devices having the problem.
