C610 Networking Question

Hi,

(Sorry for the crossposting)

I just received a C610 notebook that I'm trying to hook up to my network.

My network only uses USB connection - is there a way to convert from USB to ethernet so I can use the installed ethernet card in the laptop?

Or is there a USB ethernet card (PCMCIA) I can buy to utilize my current network?

By the way, my network is an old 2wire one that utilizes the telephone wires - works OK for me for now, don't want to change it.

Thanks

Mike

Hi,

In general, no. Connecting a USB-only modem to an Ethernet-only network device (router, switch or computer) will not work.

USB to Ethernet adapter cables exist that join a USB port to an RJ-45 Ethernet port. These network cables are designed to connect two computers. For these cables to work, special network drivers must exist on the USB device to manage the USB end of the connection. On a computer, these drivers can be installed through its network operating system. Such drivers cannot be installed on USB modems as these devices lack general-purpose computing capability.

Thanks for the info. I guess it's time to upgrade the network - maybe go for FIOS.
