Can any Optiplex support two Nics?

Hello!
I have here an Optiplex, he's the tower configuration. When I'm not writing computer programs that do strange things, I create hardware that does even stranger things. To this end I am exploring the peculiar world of Ethernet, from the point of view of the AUI based connectors.

Basically I'd like to plug into the computer either a 3COM 3C509 with the settings for the card pointing to the AUI connector, or a USB based LinkSys gizmo, connected to that would be my breadboard based gizmo. It would be talking to the piece through a AUI->10BASE-T translator.

What I'd like to know is if this computer can support more then one Ethernet card, and when its running under XP.

Mr Spoc,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

Assuming that you have the free expansion slots, it should not be a problem installing two NICs (network interface card). I don’t know that this configuration as actually been tested here, but installing another NIC should not really be any different then installing any other PCI card.

I have an Optiplex GX-280 (running XP) with an Intel Pro-100 ethernet NIC in addition to the onboard NIC - it works.
We have also used GX-110 computers as routers by adding a NIC. So yes, Optiplex computers do support two NICs.

You mention 10-baseT and AUI ports. I have not seen those on PCI cards, only ISA cards. If you need that then I hope your Optiplex is old enough to still have ISA slots.
