The main reasons that Windows XP and Windows 98/ME networks have trouble are due to the following:
1. Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and have unique names on the network
2. Make sure all firewalls are disabled or properly configured.  On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.

3. Make sure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
4. Make sure the drives and folders have been designated as shared.
5. If the Windows 98/ME computers have Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary network logon, make sure that the proper username and password are entered when these machines boot.  If Windows logon is the primary network logon, make sure that either a null password is used or that the correct password is used when booting these computers.  Hitting the cancel button at the password prompt may prevent network connectivity.

i've got the  two computer running xp configured properly, and both show up in the work group.  but, i cant seem to get the third computer running win 98 (which i added to the network yesterday)  to show up, even though its there.  the 98 computer can see the other two and access files on either; but the other two cant access any files on the 98 machine, or see it in the work group.  i guess what i'm trying to do is add the 98 computer to the work group so i can access files on it from the other two computers running xp.  or to make it more clear, we'll call the first xp computer "computer 1", the second xp computer "computer 2" and the third computer running win 98 "computer 3"

now, in "my network places" on computer 1 it shows the shared folders on computer 1, and computer 2.

on computer 2 in "my network places" it shows the shared folders on computer 1 and computer 2

on computer 3 in "network neighborhood" its shows the shared folders of computers 1 &2 and can access either.  ihow do i get computer 3 to show up and be accessable to computers 1&2?

if that makes any sense.

Yea, sort of, I'm kind of new to this.  But, anyhow, I've got it now.  It was a little confusing getting the folders "shared" .  i had to go into the control panel, and click on network where it gave me the button for file and print sharing.  Had to use the CD, restart and then change individual folders to shared, but in the end it all worked out.

thanks a bunch for the help.  XP is sooooooooooo much easier when it comes to file sharing.
