Yes, you can share the printer.  It would be helpful to know which version of Windows you are running on each of the computers.  Without that, I can only give general instructions.  On the desktop, open the printers folder and select the printer you want to share.  Right click on the icon for this printer, then select Sharing from the drop down menu.  Give the printer a sharing name and OK out.

On the laptop, open the Printers folder.  If you are running Windows XP, the printer may have already been recognized and will appear in the Printers folder.  If it doesn't, click on the icon to Add Printer.  Specify a network printer, then browse to find the printer and install drivers for the printer for the version of Windows installed on the laptop.

Your messages are confusing and I don't quite understand what you are saying.  Is file and printer sharing enabled on the desktop?  Can you share files between the laptop and the desktop?  Is the Windows XP firewall disabled for the local area connection on both computers?  You seem to be saying that you tried to enable sharing of the printer on the laptop.  The only printer that needs to be shared is the the one in the printers folder on the desktop (the computer to which the printer is actually connected.  Once it is shared, it should show up in the printers folder on the laptop.
