Can not connect to Wireless network

My Inspiron 9100 running XP Pro cannot connect to a Wireless network using Dell wireless card. I can see the wireless router detected on the Dell card. When I click the wireless icon on XP quick launch bar I get " wireless network wireless network not connected" I have tried FN + F2 no joy Jimmy

To better troubleshoot this problem, open a Command Prompt window > type ipconfig/all at blinking cursor > Enter > Copy then Paste results into your next post for this forum?

Okay, your router isn't assigning an IP address to your laptop, wirelessly. Hardwire(ethernet)a cable to your router from your laptop and see if you get connectivity that way? If it works? Then, we will have at least narrowed the problem to the wireless configuration.

Okay, now I'm confused. Are you having trouble getting your Dell laptop to connect wirelessly to your home network? Your friend's home network? Both?

The Dell laptop is 3 years old my HP laptop is 2 weeks old and works just fine with with this new Linksys WAG200g router my HP connected first time.
The DELL worked as a WIFI in my home however, I am trying to set up a a WIFI network in my friends house.
I am using a new router to run two laptops on a new set up
