Cannot configure modem

This wireless connection has aged me about 30 years.
I have Verizon DSL with the Westell 327W router/modem.  It works just dandy when plugged directly into my Inspiron 8600.  We had a lot of problems with the original Netgear WG511T cards we originally purchased.  They worked for about 2 weeks and then quit.  We returned them to dell and now I have a Dell Wireless 1450 USB adapter.  Installed the adapter and software, but it could not connect to the router.  I checked security settings on the network and then went to 192.168.1.1 to make sure they matched with the modem.  Everything matched.  I returned to Dell support to see if there was a FAQ or something.  Then I decided to go back to 192.168.1.1 to adjust some of the security settings just to get the wireless connection up and running.  On MSN, typing http://192.168.1.1 went directly to a search screen.  Putting http://192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer resulted in "Page cannot be displayed".  Now, I can't configure my modem at all and cannot connect wirelessly.  I tried to check "ipconfig" to make sure I was using the right IP, but the black screen comes up, flashes for a second, and then disappeared.  For the connection, I have checked "Obtain IP address automatically".  I tried Verizon's support.  The customer service is helpless and Verizon Online's Support center has been "gathering relevant system information" for the past hour.  I'm new at this, so if anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong or walk me through this, please help.

Try logging into the router through a wired connection to change the settings.  Temporarily disable all security settings and if the SSID is hidden, unhide it.  As for the ipconfig command, you need to run it from within a command prompt window so it will stay on the screen.  To do this go to Start > Run, type cmd then click OK.  In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all then hit the Enter key.

When you connect the router/modem to your computer by ethernet, do the link lights on both the network card and the router port to which you are connected light up?

The lights on the modem/router are lit up.  One light on the adapter is blinking, the other is on (looking for the network that I can't connect to because I can't configure the modem).

Go to a command prompt window by going to Start > Run and typing cmd then clicking on OK.  In the command prompt window type ping 192.168.1.1 then hit the Enter key.  What happens?

Thanks Steve.  I can't even set up my wireless to configure my router.  I've tried the wired connection and still get a "Page cannot be displayed" screen.

Steve,

I'm on the phone with the silly Verizon people now.  We tried the ping test and all four timed out.  The rep is actually stumped and has to ask for back-up.

I actually do not have another ethernet cable.  I can connect fine to DSL.  Verizon is telling me that it is due to something with my computer.  I just don't understand how I could configure it one second and then, big blow-up.

Have you got a different ethernet cable you can try?  If so, try it and see if it to see if it is a problem with the ethernet cable.

I'm now a bit confused here.  Do you have a separate DSL modem besides the Westell modem/router?  When you say you can connect directly to DSL, which modem are you connecting to? When you say you connecting directly to DSL are you connecting by ethernet or USB?

I'm sorry for the confusion.  I am connected to the DSL using the Westell modem/router.  I don't have another external modem or ethernet cable.  Verizon is telling me that there is something wrong with  my computer that is not letting me access the configuration page.

I've been trying to use the USB wireless adapter, but the configuration problem happened before I could really start on that.
