Cannot connect to the internet
Hello, I have a Dell Inspirion 5100. I just bought a Netgear broadband wireless router and a Netgear wireless USB 2.0 adapter. I have my router connected through a ethernet cord to my Compaq Presario and the USB adapter attached to the laptop. The router works fine and I can even use the USB adapter on my other pc I have in another room. I can connect to the internet just fine and file share with the other pc. However, when I use the adapter on the Inspirion it shows it is connected to the network, but I cannot connect to the internet and it will not show the residental gateway. I installed the software correctly to the laptop, it is set up for DHCP and no wep or wap. The router is set up for DHCP with no security. I even disabled the firewall on my pc. The firewall on my laptop is off. What could be wrong with it?

To help troubleshoot the problem, do the following form the 5100 with the USB wireless adaper installed:
Go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

The IP address you are getting is the autoconfiguration IP address, it is the iP address assinged when windows cannot get an IP address from the router.
To help troubleshoot this problem, see if you can sucessfully make a wired ethernet connection to the router. If you can, then it tells us it is not a problem with the general network configuation of your computers, and we can eliminate a lot of troubleshooting steps. If you can't connect even with a wired ethernet connection, then it tells us there is something wrong with the way Windows is setup for networking.
