Cannot connect to the internet
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1521 with Vista Home Premium. It is my niece's computer. She was on Facebook and picked up some type of Rogue Antivirus. I think I was able to remove this by downloading Malwarebytes from another computer and installing it on hers. 10 items were removed with Malwarebytes. When I try to open up the various options in Network and Files Sharing nothing will open. I tried to clik on Diagnostic repair in Networks and File Sharing but nothiing happened. I am sort of stuck what to try next. Can any one offer any guidance. Annie

Annie,
Found this.
Right click on task bar. Click Properties. Click on Notification Area tab. Check box next to Network. Click Apply.

Annie,
Did you try restarting the computer in the safe mode, tap F8 at startup and try repair my computer?

Thanks Rick. I am on the internet with this Inspiron 1501. I belive it had a firewall problem. My neice has AVG Security Suite Installed and I do not think she had the firewall set up correctly. When I adjusted the firewall I was able to get on the internet. I am using a wireless connection. However I have some proplems with this laptop and want to get it working it great shape before she picks it up.
I cannot run the repair as you suggested. It asks for a password which my neice does not know. She is the adminstrator. The message I receive is "Your account has been disabled. Please see your adminstrator? What do I do?
Also there is no wireless network icon in the system tray. When I try to open Network and Sharing Center (Vista) it takes 5-10 minutes to open and I cannot click on any of the options. I have to go to task manager to shut the window down. can you help? I am a bit over my head here. Annie

I am making some progress. I went to my nieces account and reset her passord.I deleted the one she had and then recreated a new one-actually I used her original password. I can now open the Network and File Sharing Window and click on the various options. Why this worked I have no idea. But one more problem is solved. I still would like to see the wireless icon in the system tray so I am going to try some more googling. Annie

Rick, Network was already checked. So I unchecked it>apply >ok, then went back in and checked it again. The icon now appears in the system tray.
I hope my neice appreciates this. She got the virus while on Facebook. I know she needs her computer back like yesterday. She asked to borrow my laptop for class so I am trying to rush this. I really perfer that she not borrow my laptop. She is a dear girl but has no sense when cruising the net. Thanks for all your help and replies.
