Are any security features enabled on the router to which you are tyring to connect?  Is this your wireless network you are trying to connect to or is it someone elses?  Can you connect through the router using a wired ethernet connection? (This might help us determine if this is a hardware problem or a software problem.)

Thanks a lot for the reply, Steve.  Right now I have not turned on any security features--I plan to do that once I get it all working.  And it is my wireless network.  I can connect my Dell if I use a wired ethernet connection and my friend can connect his laptop through the wireless connection.  My Dell's wireless connection shows as connected with a Strong Signal, but the browser won't let me pull up sites.  I appreciate any help.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Steve--I did this on both machines.  First is the machine that is not working with wireless.  I did this with the ethernet wire unplugged.  It said it was connected via wireless but wouldn't pull up a web page.

Your output for the machine that is not working on wireless, shows a big problem.  Somehow you appear to have set a static IP address and it is not getting an IP address from the router.   To correct this, go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections then right-click on your Wireless connection and select Properties from the drop-dwon menu.  Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on the "Properties" button.  Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected and that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is also selected.   OK your way out and try to connect again.

Steve, you're brilliant!  That worked like a charm!  We appreciate you taking the time to help us--this is a big stress of our shoulders!  Thanks again--

Hi, I have a similar problem to Ryan's, but Steve's suggestions didn't work for me. I've looked through a lot of other threads and found nothing to help, and this problem is the closest to mine.

My laptop (Inspiron 600m) used to be connected wirelessly with no problems until a few days ago. My cat got onto the keyboard, and from the best I can tell, stepped on the Fn-F2 keys, and then the power button. When I turned it back on, no internet! It seems that while my computer is connected to the network, and has good signal strength, it has "limited or no connectivity" and won't connect to the internet. I click the Repair wireless network connection button and everything goes fine until it gets to the step where it renews my IP address, then it says that it can't renew it and the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

I really don't know what to do, and my cat refuses to walk on the keys again and magically make it work. Please help! This is driving me crazy. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem, expect that I'm sure that no cat pressed any keys!

I appreciate any help. It's really frustrating not being able to connect on wireless network.

Thanks

pawolf,

Note that if you are changing the connection to modem between a computer and a router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem (either the router or the computer), then turn on any other computers that will connect through the router.

Have you set up the router to make the PPPoE connection?  When you connect directly to the dsl modem, either Windows or a third party utility makes the PPPoE connection.  When you connect to the router, the router must be set up to do the PPPoE connection.
