Cannot find sever - I'm lost...

This is my first time over here, so forgive me if this has been discussed before.
I have an XPS gen 4, XP, Raid, 2Gb Ram, Broadcom extreme gigabit controller, etc, etc.  Real happy with it.

All was working fine until yesterday.  I can't connect to the internet at all.   When I look in network connections, I see my DSL connection it says connected, firewalled, (PPPOE).
I also see a 1394 connection, connected, firewalled, 1394 adapter.  There is also another one called 1394 connection2 - it shows connected, firewalled, 1394 adapter. Lastly, there is an entry for Local Area Connection, it shows Acquiring Network Address, Broadcom Net Extreme 57xx controller.

Everything worked fine with this setup until yesterday when I started getting that Acquiring Network Address message.  Seems like it takes one and a half to two minutes before it shows connected. Even after it tells me it's connected, I cannot connect to the internet.  I've deleted my DSL connection and estsblished a new one - no help.

What's really weird is that I have a wireless router attached to my DSL modem and I can get on the internet using my laptop - that's how I'm contacting you now. That same modem services my XPS.  I'ts like the XPS just can't find the DSL server or something.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Steve,

Ran Winsockfix and all is back to to normal.  Thanks a million!

Now then, in order for me to learn something here, tell me what your thought process was regarding this problem.  Is it just one of those things a person has to be aware of, or how did you determine that running that little program might fix something? What would've "glitched" in the first place, and why does that happen?  Thanks man.

Glad it worked.  This can occur due to spyware and sometimes due to removal of spyware.  It is the result of a corruption of the winsock stack and winsockfix uninstalls and reinstalls winsock.   It is one of the first things I suggest when a user reports that they cannot obtain an IP address, especially if it can't get an IP address on any network device.
