Yes, another piece of JUNK. I would suggest a internal USR 5610B PCI modem. Those cheap PCs can get pricey if you start upgrading the junkware that come pre-installed at the factory.
Can't get broadband and can't get cable yet. Couple more weeks and that may change, so I won't botehr upgrading at this point. Just wondered if any Dell Tech's look into this place and make recommendations on what changes can be made to fix this.

Ditto!!!! I am having the same problem with my new Dell 4600, with the BCM V.92 Modem. Cannot connect above 28.8, always connected at 44+ with my "old" system using a USRobotics V.90 modem. Tech support is giving me the same story about all the "Variables" that can affect my connect speed. Funny, all those "variables" had no negative effect on my old system!
Has anyone located an updated driver for this modem? Tech Support sent me to a site where I was supposed to find a download of drivers for this modem but the site contained no mention of this modem. Thanks RonEd

Your 'old system' had a fairly decent modem, your new system has a bargain basement 'soft' modem. The modem in the old system did a better job of handling the impairment on your phone line than the BCM softmodem does.
These bottom of the line softmodems do work adequately for the majority of users. It's more cost effective for Dell to use a cheap modem that works for most and then deal with the cases where it doesn't, than to user a higher cost modem that is overkill for the majority of customers.
Modems are relatively cheap. Save yourself the hassle and go out and buy a better one to replace the softmodem in your new machine. The USR 5610a is commonly recommended, but is not the solution for all situations. Buy from a retailer that will allow a return, and if the 5610a (or whatever you buy) doesn't work well for your line conditions, you can take it back and try something else.
You can get a USR V.90 model 3090 WinModem with driver from a company named cnetpc.com 877-542-3792 201-770-9201 Secaucus, NJ
Watch for OEM modems as they frequently are low cost solutions with no drivers save those that were provided the vendor at time of sale and are not available from any source except the vendor. Look for modems that are either not OEM or, preferably, come with a driver disk.
I had same problem with my new 4600 and called my server, they told me to add +MS=V90 and my hookup went from 26 to 50 I am very happy now that it works right !!!!!!!!!!
Thank you HossyGuy! The string you shared works for me too! For the first time in weeks I am connecting at 50.6 kbps!
At this point should I even bother updating the driver? If so, how does one remove the bvrp modem-on-hold software? Would it work to remove the "BCM v.92 56K modem" software found in the control panel and then instal the updated driver found at -- http://support.ap.dell.com/ap/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R57260?
So I updated the driver using the one referred to by MoniQ. A part of that was a diagnosis tool named Status Monitor. The results of my latest connection shows modulation at v.34.
I was flying high for the first two times after I added the initialization string. First connect was 50.6 and second 52. I thought my problem was solved. However, for the remainder of the day I consistently connected at 33.6 every time I logged on. Fed up, I went to Best Buys and bought a US Robotics modem. Imagine, my surprise when I connected at 31.7 the first time and a measly 21.2 the second after installing the new modem. Ugh. I added in the same initialization string with this modem and so far every connect has been at least 50.6.
I think the problem could be that the BCM modem was not backwards compatible with v.90. The ISP
I use at this time is not v.92 compatible which is why I think the string helped.
OK, try: S50=23S51=63, if that dosen't work change the last number to 95, if that dosen't work try: +DS44=0 , if that dosen't work try: ATS50.4=0S51=31
if that doesn't work try +MS=V92 it depends on what your server uses. If none of these work call your server they can give you more suggestions.

dmccarthy,
$3 modem... cheap modems do a poor job. Get broadband or get a good modem.

That was a lot to ask, I know.

Try adding the +MS=V90 initialization string under the ADVANCED section of the modem's properties. This string will force the modem to use V90.
