Sorry to once again be back with yet more questions but I am stumped!

When I click on the first link (under Ethernet) I am taken to a Netgear site. You cited a custom install...but I have no idea what to do here.

Two questions:

1. Why am I directed to Netgear when my wireless adapter is Linksys?

2. If Netgear IS where I'm supposed to be, what do I do once there? There are all sorts of file links - which one is the right one? I sit there trying to figure out what I'm to download...but I have no idea!

Thanks again!

Teresa

The hardware IDs match the Netgear WG311v3 PCI Adapter. The software should be this download.

My guess is your router is Linksys and your wireless PCI adapter is the NG311v3.

Well...before I got your answer, I took a guess and went with the WG311v3 3.1 Netgear file...and Voila! It worked! Actually, my adapter is Linksys too (WMP54G...Router E1200) which why I was so confused. I didn't understand the connection with Netgear and Linksys. Still don't...but at least I got as far as I did!

Now I'm connected but the system is checking for the IP address...and nothing. It keeps trying. I have read many threads suggesting all kinds of fixes. Conflicting drivers? Refreshing the address? And on and on. What is your suggestion? I did have this problem last time, too. But, again, I'll be darned if I can recall what I did 3 or 4 years ago.

THANK YOU for all your help! I am grateful..:-)

When I try to release and renew the IP address, this is what I get:

"No operation can be performed on the Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected"

Is it because:

When I tried to load Dell Audio Driver 69382, I got "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio Card on your system"

When I tried to load Patch 75304 (didn't load Patch 80459...do I have to?), I got "An error occurred while launching the setup"

As far as Creative goes...I have NO IDEA what you are telling me to do there. I see the pictures on their support site but have no idea what to do from there. I do not see a link saying "older or similar" product. Am I looking for an audio card? Since I don't know what to do first, I can't go any further to Audigy then Legacy. I did poke around and alto I saw Audigy products, I never saw the word Legacy anywhere.

I'm soooo frustrated...:'''(

If you are sure it is a WMP54G then uninstall the Netgear file (I got that from the hardware ID).

Select downloads here and version 2:

Yes...I am certain it is Linksys. The router and the adapter.

So why then am I connected if it is the wrong software? Why would Hardware ID tell you something that would cause you to install unrelated software? I'm so confused I could cry. I swear I will never do this again. My husband will have to hire an IT person to do it! lol Would I be having all these issues if we had upgraded to Windows 7 or 8? My husband insisted on keeping XP (which I don't really blame him for wanting to do as 7 and 8 are awful).

I hope you saw my last message about the IP address.

Ok...you are going to think I'm an idiot...but...I opened the tower to look at the adapter and low and behold, it is in fact Netgear! I guess the Hardware ID's don't lie! lol The software we have is Linksys...Netgear nowhere to be found. I guess Linksys was the adapter prior. Anyway, I had just uninstalled the software so I reinstalled it after putting the tower back together. Case closed.

So I am now connected to the Internet but still cannot get online. I'm still seeing the same Audio Multimedia Controller on the Device menu with the "?". Is that the problem? When I tried to get online thru Internet Explorer, I was told to enter a GUEST password and to get one from the 'owner'...? It had Cisco on the upper left hand corner. I've never seen that before. Yet another obstacle I cannot figure out. BUT...at least I'm connected. Baby steps...

Thank you for your continued support.

There's usually the wireless password stamped on the back of the wireless router, this is to make sure only the owner of the router gets access. If there's an issue with the multimedia controller you likely still have no sound. The driver from Creative will solve it. I will look for a direct link but am on a mobile device (in Czech Republic on the way to Poland) just now. Regarding newer versions of Windows, Windows 7 and 8.1 likely won't have the same issues you had with XP as many more drivers are inbuilt to these OS however I don't think the Dimension 8300 will run Windows 7 or 8.1 that well.

I ended up getting to the Internet Explorer page where, of course, I can't get online. Not sure why that other Cisco page came up prior...I did nothing different. So...it appears that I am an inch away from my goal! I need to figure out why I cannot get online. I AM connected to the wireless network at full strength.

Is the multimedia driver preventing me from getting online? I cannot imagine why.

I await the Creative info...

THANK YOU!

So, I installed the driver...it worked! All my devices are now working! THANK YOU!

The only other issue now is that I cannot get online. I am connected to the wireless network, but I see that the signal for the wireless adapter keeps going in and out. So when I click on my preferred network, it is trying to acquire the address, but cannot. I watch as the signal goes in and out and I suspect it is never enuf time to connect. I ran the diagnostics and checked the key. All fine. Any thoughts? Could it be the adapter going? Do they go slowly? Or do they just <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU>out? I'm almost there!

There are some words that I don't expect to be removed that others flag up as profanity. There are also a few ones that are blocked as spammers use them.

It seems you have all the drivers installed so I don't think it is a driver issue.

I'm going to ask some of the other Community Rockstars to assist you on this one as I'm travelling still and just had a bit of a crisis.

As its became more of a networking issue that a driver issue so I will also move the thread to the Networking, Internet and Wireless board.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post this here, but I am still unable to get on the Internet. All devices are fine in the Device Mgr, the Wireless Network has a strong signal (when I allow Netgear to monitor rather than Windows otherwise the signal goes in and out). I've done all the IP stuff...all addresses are in order. But no matter what I do, I cannot get on IE. Oh, I also had to set my preferred WN to WEP in order to be able to connect and keep a signal. Is this an issue with that Netgear model: WG311v3? I unistalled the driver I was given (3.2.3.2, I recall) and reverted back to the original one out of sheer desperation (read on some message boards that this had been problematic). Nothing changed. I am at wit's end, for sure. Should I just replace the wireless adapter?

Thank you.

Driver wise your system is working correctly. It seems like you have an issue with the wireless router however. Can you plug an Ethernet cable into the router?

Hi Philip,

Well, it turns out it was the wireless adapter as I originally suspected. The signal kept going in and out and everything else was working fine. I just couldn't stay connected. This is why I asked you if they die slowly or just *rap out (the big bad word my post got tagged for!) So, I had my hubby pick up a new USB type adapter and BOOM! like magic...online like magic! :-)

That concludes this chapter...Amen! It was a long one.

Thank you so much for all of your help and best to you in your travels!

Teresa
