Cannot hear modem during dialup

Insprion 600m with XP Pro and PCTel 2340WT driver 2.50.52 6/13/2003

I had to replace my hard drive and reinstall everything.  My audio works find, but I am unable to hear my dial-up progress when connecting to the internet.  The connection does work ok, but I need to be able to hear the dialup to short-circuit some of the really noisy dialup connections I get sometimes while traveling.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rick

Can you hear a dial tone?

Give this a try.

Open your Volume Control and see if you have a control for PC Speaker
If not, go to Options > Properties, tick the entry for PC Speaker if available, and click OK to make the change
Adjust the PC Speaker volume and see if you can now hear the progress of the handshake

No, I cannot hear a dialtone.  All of the modem functions are silent.  Normal windows sounds and audio playback is ok.

The volume control is at its highest setting.

I forgot to mention that I have installed the latest audio driver this morning: R90698.exe

Have you checked your Volume Control's PC Speaker settings?

Yes, the volume control is set properly.

Perhaps a recap would be helpful:

This problem started after I installed a new hard drive. Inspiron 600 m, Windows XP Pro.

All other audio functions work properly - CD music, Windows Media center, Windows default sounds etc.

Audio driver has been updated to most recent. (Sigma Tel C-Major audio  date - 11/15/2004 v5.10.0.3952)

Modem driver has been updated to most recent. (PCTEL 2304WT v.9x Mdc Modem - date 6/13/2003 v2.50.52.0)

I still cannot hear the modem handshake. I'm not sure what the audio codex is, but is this a possibility?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Rick

Somehow it works now.

I don't know exactly what I did, however I did change the max connection speed in the modem settings from 115K down to 19K. Then I started getting the audio handshake.  When I changed it back to 115K I still had audio handshake, so I don't know if this triggered something or not.

Anyway, problem solved for now.
