" i found the driver on the internet because i lost the disk that came with it."
is a bad start. Always go to the vendor web site for the proper drivers, and only use those...
Using unknown drivers from the Internet have their risks, like viruses..

I have not lost it, i've tried to install both the driver from the disk and the one from the internet and the both give me the same error message. The one from the internet is provided by the Dell site so there is no possibility virusses are on that one. I think I made this clear in my question, please read before you comment, thanks.

graeverke,
Without knowing your make and model of computer and operating system, this is basic...
When you installed the operating system, did you install the Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Start with the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

But, but, but....how do you fix it if you've already installed things in the wrong order??

flgurl6371,
The Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers know what is attached to your system. If they were not installed first, the rest of the drivers failed to install.
Just install the drivers in the correct order and it should start working.
