To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
Another note...when I began having problems yesterday, I attempted a system restore and was unable to complete a successful restore using several points.
You need to run this command from the machine having the problem while it is physically connected to the device that provides internet access, otherwise it doesn't tell me anything. Is this what you did?
Steve--
I downloaded the file to the laptop, saved to a disk, opened on the desktop.
I am having problems creating a system registry backup with winsock before selecting fix(message states error saving file. Should I resolve THAT problem before proceeding?
Yes...it WAS spyware. I did some research on the internet..found a site, www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm, that listed WebHancer as a big problem! I ran spybot and ad-aware found webhancer and other nuisances. After safe removal, I am back on-line. Thanks for your help!
Now to fix your System Restore problem. Inability to use System Restore commonly happens when the restore data base becomes corrupt. Once it is corrupt, none of the restore points will work. The only solution is to disable System Restore, reboot the computer, and then re-enable System Restore. This flushes the restore database, resets, and allows it to work again, but all previous restore points (which are useless anyway because they are corrupt) are removed. It should, however, work from now on.

here is the information as result of the command prompt:
Host Name: (my computer name)
Primary DNS suffix:
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled:No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State: Media Disconnected
Description: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
Physical address: 00-11-11-5A-37-29
I assume that "media disconnected" is referring to the fact that I have my laptop connected rather than my desktop so that I may have internet access.
Thanks for any help...L

Just run it without doing the registry backup. Have you had problems with spyware on this computer recently? Have you run any antispyware programs?

Great, I am glad that problem is solved.
