Cannot repair network connection after clean install

I did a reinstall of XP on my Inspiron 5100 and could not get access to the internet. I removed XP, installed Fedora 3 and was able to connect to the internet without problems. I then removed Fedora 3 and reinstalled XP. But I still cannot connect to the internet.

So I did the following:

I downloaded SP2 with my other computer and I have installed it on my laptop that has the problem.

I have opened the command prompt and entered:
ping 127.0.0.1
and I get: “Packets: sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0”

Then I entered:
ipconfig
and I get: “Windows IP Configuration”

I went to Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connections

I then right clicked on 1394 Connection> chose "Repair" from the drop down menu and the following popup window appeared.

"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Failed to query TCP/IP setting of the connection. Cannot proceed. For assistance, contact the person who manages your network."

Then I went to Start>Run>cmd
entered: netsh winsock reset
rebooted the computer
went back to command prompt and entered: Netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
rebooted the computer
entered: ipconfig
And I still only get: “Windows IP Configuration”

And now I am stuck trying to figure out how to get my TCP/IP repaired so I can connect to the internet.

I am preplexed on this.

The 1394 connection is not your ethernet connection - it is your firewire port and is not normally used in network connections.  When you reinstall Windows, did you install the chipset drivers as the first device drivers intalled?  Windows will not be able to recognize or install drivers for your ethernet adapter until the chipset drivers are present.

No I did not install the drivers and that turned out to be my exact problem. Installing the drivers corrected this problem and now it works like a charm.

Thank you.

Hi, I am having the same problem... How does one install the Chipset drivers during the XP Pro Install?  Just got an Inspiron 6000 and it had XP Home - I did an install of XP pro ... Now I get the same erro as mentioned above...  Dell no longer ships the drivers cd...  Any help would be apreciated.  Thanks
