A bit more information would be helpful:
Internet connection type (dial-up, cable modem, etc.)
Network type (hub, router, serial cable, etc.)
Operating systems of all computers involved

Thanks!

Hmmm... I tried using a x-over cable once, a long time ago. I didn't have much success then and I haven't tried to use it since.

My recommendation is to spend a few $'s to get a home router. I use a Netgear RP614 and am quite happy with it:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=516355&CatId=584
It not only makes it very easy to share an internet connection, but it doubles as a hardware firewall - something which is almost mandatory if you want to keep your computer safe these days.

The added benefit to using a home router is that you wouldn't need your computer attached to the system to use your X-Box (at least I think not - I don't have any experience with the X-Box system...).

Hope this helps.
Bob

01dabreoo,

Can you post the full text of any messages you receive with "Error 1003"? If it appears in a dialog box, is there a program name in the upper left side of the title bar?

01dabreoo,

Thanks for the additional information on the error message. That narrows down the possibilities a lot.

I agree completely with "bob610"'s suggestion. Internet Connection Sharing can be very troublesome to set up. For one thing, you've only described one network interface in the 4600 system, and Internet Connection sharing requires two - one to the broadband modem, and one for the other device that's sharing the connection. Are you using a USB connection to the broadband modem, and an Ethernet connection to the XBox?

Do you have XP Service Pack 2 installed on the 4600? One likely possibility is that the XP firewall is preventing the connection from being shared. If the machine's running Service Pack 1, the only recourse is to disable the XP firewall completely. That's a very bad idea for a machine that's directly connected to the Internet.

If at all possible, you should obtain a router and connect the modem to the "Internet" side of the router, and connect both the XBox and the 4600 to the "LAN" side of the router, using Ethernet for both. That will eliminate the need to struggle to get Internet Connection Sharing working, and better protect both machines, as Bob described.

01dabreoo,

You're welcome! It would be a good idea to make sure that the problem with Winsock 2 didn't arise from some form of malware by checking the machine over with Ad-Aware and Spybot as described in this article.
