cannot sync PDA with bluetooth and vista

Here's my problem.
I recently got an inspiron 6400 with 355 bluetooth module running with vista premium.
I managed to sync with my PDA (asus a636), through USB.

Syncing using bluetooth however does not succceed. My PDA constantly complains that the inspiron does not have the correct service ???
Using the same PDA to browse on the inspiron does work, so the BT connection seems to be OK.

I did install the latest version of WMDC. This offers to use bluetooth or USB.
On my desktop although, I use active sync 4.1 on XP where I had to reffer to a virtual serial port. This one works fine for some time now.

Anyone recognizes these problems ?

Hi Again,

I browsed a little bit more and came up with a solution.
The solution as described below worked for me, and I do not want to keep it for myself...
It seems the problem is that my PDA and the Inspiron use a widcomm bluetooth stack. Vista (wmdc) now decided to budget a little on options in there interface, and wiped the COM port option from windows mobility device centre (wmdc).

This is the solution I found:

one of the problem that I get after migrating to Vista is getting Activesync to work using bluetooth. For some reason, Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) that's installed separately from Vista, doesn't allow bluetooth synchronisation to work especially if either your desktop or mobile device is running on widcomm bluetooth stack. Selecting 'Bluetooth' in the WMDC's connection setting doesn't work, at least for me. This is because while my mobile device detects my desktop via bluetooth, it cannot determine there's an activesync service (i.e. WMDC) running in the background in the desktop. In the good old days of Activesync, all I need to tell activesync to 'listen' to a bluetooth com port. There's no such ability in WMDC.

"This registry hack, to be applied to your desktop pc/laptop, enables WMDC to bind to a bluetooth virtual com port (as you set this com port as the incoming port). Go to \ HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services, modify the value name "SerialPort" from "Bluetooth or Infrared" to "COM4", where COM4 is the virtual com port associated to your bluetooth incoming com port. The number varies from desktop to desktop, so choose the right com port for your specific use."

After the registry change, don't forget to reboot. And make shure not to change the device settings again, to avoid the registry key being overwritten with the "bluetooth" setting.

regards, doodel
