cant access certain cites on the internet

i cant go to certain sites on the internet (ie: ebay, paypal).  i dont understand why.  i have checked for spyware, disabled pop-up blockers, and even put the sites in my "trusted sites" section, yet it still doesnt work.  also on some sites (like facebook, yahoo mail) they make me log on twice or reload the site to be able to get on them.  i also downloaded firefox and still cant access the web sites on that either.   does anyone know something i can do to fix this????

A couple of thoughts, although they may not fix your problem.  Temporarily disable your firewall and see if you can access them.  If you have a separate firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Norton, etc) make sure the Windows XP firewall is not active too - if you have two firewalls they can conflict and cause problems.  Finally there may be an issue with your ISP that is causing the problem so check with them, too.

Your ISP?

Router brand/model (if any)?

Some models of Netgear routers have an internal DNS forwarder that started breaking for cable modem users (especially Comcast) in April/May, this might explain one possible cause. Another possible cause is that one of your ISP's connections to the backbone died temporarily and so routing to some parts of the Internet is not available. There are plenty of possible causes though, although the issue of some sites working with a reload points to something like the broken DNS forwarder issue to me.

Unfortunately Netgear's support forums have been down for an upgrade for over a month, otherwise I could point you to some good threads covering the DNS forwarder issue and workarounds if you have a Netgear router that is affected.
