Can't access new router
I'm having problems accessing a router I've just bought. The laptop downstairs can see it and I've been able to log into it's setup page from there but I can't get the Dimension 4600 in my son's room to see it even thought it's wired to it. I've tried pinging the router but it just times out. I've pinged the dimension and it's sending back a reply.
Does anyone know what the NIC lights at the back of the PC should show. On this one, its got a green LED at the top and an amber one at the bottom. The router shows two green lights on the port that the PC's connected to.
Any idea's ?

Yes, that was my thought but now I know it isn't.
I have just had a play with the TCP/IP setting as I noticed that DHCP was disabled when I ran ipconfig, so I thought I'd change it. While doing this I also put in the default gateway address manually and hey presto I could ping the router and pull up the setup page.............great. So then I thought I'd try using XP's network setup wizard to see if I could find the laptop down stairs and ....................... everythings back to how it was to begin with and I can't remember exactly what I changed in TCP/IP.
How should this section be set up ?

Excuse me for jumping in on your problem, but I think you have hit on the solution to my problem. Yesterday, my new Dell Desktop (ND) lost its connectivity. I have my Old Dell (OD) still connected to the network, while I transfer stuff. The OD can still get to the internet, I also have a Laptop (wireless) and it too can access the internet. I found that one of my ports on the router is bad but there are three other s that are OK. I still cant get the ND connected. You did things that I think I should do, ping, ipconfig and "manually entered gateway address". Can you please explain this steps. I ran some of the troubleshooting procedures and discovered that the network card is OK, I also replaced the cable. Still no connectivity. I'll keep watching the board. Thanks.

Okay, thanks to all who've replied so far. I've got a bit further !
The Dell sees the router and the wireless laptop sees the router. The laptop also sees the Dell (i.e the shared drive) but the Dell doesn't see the laptop.
What do I do to get the Dell to see the laptop ?
Also what should I setup to ensure security on the system ?
The router supports w.e.p. and w.p.a. and 802.1x, at what level should I set these up ?
Cheers.
