Can't access other computers on my network
I have a desktop running XP (not wireless) and a netbook (wireless) running Windows 7 starter edition. I set up and used a 'workgroup' network for a number of months and could access shared files on each computer from the other with no problem.
Recently, I got a new modem and since then even though both computers can see each other on the network but they can't access the shared folders.
- both have sharing turned on for the appropriate folders
- my workgroup has the same name on both computers
- both have the same username and passwords
- I can connect and use the internet normally from both computers
However, I cannot see the shared folders on the computer. When I try to access the netbook from the PC I get an error message saying I don't have permissions and the network path was not found. I've gone through various articles in both Windows help and Dell online help but no joy so far.
Can anyone suggest a solution.
Thanks,
Fiona.

Fiona,
The network is looking for your old modem/router. Change the WORKGROUP name to WORKGROUP1 then set it up again.
Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP
Virus programs and firewall will block communications.

Thanks for your help Rick but no joy.
When I try to create a new workgroup (using network setup wizard) I get a message saying there was an error and it can't create the new network. Despite this message the new workgroup appears but it has the same problems as before.
Any other suggestions?

fiona_thedoonhamer,
Change them all back to WORKGROUP. Set up the network like you did when you first set it up. All your computers are looking for the old router, so setting up your network, again, should solve this problem.

Thanks for your attempts to help Rick. I've done as you suggested (numerous times!) and set up the network again. Even went wireless on my pc to see if that helped. I've spent hours and hours on this so going to give up.....

I sometimes solve a similar problem by turning off the firewall until after the connection is successful.
