Can't acquire LAN network address

I can't acquire a LAN network address. I am connected @ 100Mbps. I have Verizon DSL and can connect to internet. When I attempt to do a ipconfig /release all I get "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation". My Network connection is set to obtain IP automatically and my Device Manager tells me my Network adapter (Intel PRO/100 VE, is working properly.
Any help appreciated - Thanks

I am connected through my Verizon DSL Westell 327W modem.

You have a connection to something, what?  A router?

I agree. I am connected via ethernet. I had Verizon send me a new modem so I am fairly confident it is not the modem.

You say you can't get an IP address, yet you say you can connect to the internet.  There is something fishy about this.  Are you connecting to the dsl modem through an ethernet connection or through a USB connection?

I am trying to access the Westell modem but I can't ping it. I believe the reason I can't is because I can't get an IP address for my lan. If I do an ipconfig /all I get 0.0.0.0 for my NIC card.

The NIC card is working because you wouldn't see the 100mbps indication if you were not connected.
