Can't aquire IP address
Hello forum folks. Our XPS running XP sp3 has lost it's ability to aquire IP and go online. Probably from The Gala hijack or the avert virus (or the one that puts the false virus scanner on (or maybe the kids limewire). The thought is that the malware altered the windows host file and also the registry in the winsock,winsock2 area.
So, per the related threads on this forum, I ran: rkill scanner, winsockxpfix, ISPfix, Microsoftfixit50203 and the deleted and hopefully re-set up the winsock registry areas (scary, hope I did this right. I made a system restore point) It still will not aquire IP. I've check/swapped cables and other computers (like the one I'm on now) are working. I've also, in the last few days run some mcafee stingers. It just times out at the /iprenew commend.
Any recommendations on what to look for next? One thought is to finally pull out my Vista upgrade disk and START AGAIN. BUt I think it won't take off on SP 3, It's looking for SP2 or something and says I'm not vista upgrade compatible. Gotta get online first, though.

If none of those have worked, then it's becoming likely a complete reload may be in order. You can try a manual reset:
At a command prompt type
netsh winsock reset catalog and then reboot.
If that doesn't work, reload.

Thanks,
Disappointing. I'm not too good at this. I've backed up everything to an external hard drive. (I think) I can't seem to boot off the CD though? Thought it was f8. maybe not in the correct bios spot yet. Will the Vista upgrade actually work in XP sp3, but it doesn't know better? So I don't have to go back to sp 2? Thanks again.
