cant connect at full 56K

I cannot connect at the full 56K on my Inspiron 7000. I got this laptop from my father, who says it has a 56K modem in it, but no matter where I go to find out the properties on modem, it wont tell me exactly what speed it is. It will only tell me that it's a LT Win modem.  The fastest I can get is 26000 bps, the slowest is 14000.

I know that it has nothing to do with my phone lines because my desktop connects at 56K on same line. Please help me I feel like half my life is over just waiting for a page to load.

Bazzerk,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

This may be due to the following:

  • Incorrect drivers - download current drivers from the Downloads tab (above).
  • Try using a different modem jack elsewhere in the building.
  • Use a connection outside of the building to see if the issue is due to wiring.

To find out what hardware is on the system, choose the Current Configuration link on the main support page to perform a hardware scan of the computer.

Your desktop isn't really connecting at 56k. That is impossible in the USA. The best you can theoretically get is 53k, and that is very rare. The modem is reporting its serial speed if you're seeing 56k reported, which actually should be changed to 115k for better performance.

Get the Actiontec 8.30 driver linked below if you have the LTWinmodem.
