Can't connect to certain websites

Last week I started getting error messages when I tried to go on Twitter. Every once in awhile the page will actually load, but after awhile I'll get an error message. It used to say it couldn't connect, but now it says that the connection timed out.

Myspace and Facebook load, but not with any of the pictures. It seems like my java isn't working, but these are two of the few sites I'm having this problem with. I can view YouTube without a problem. The videos run fine. There's a short list of other sites I have the same problem with, but these are the main one's I'm noticing.

Also when I go to my itunes it won't connect to the itunes store.

My brother works for Geek Squad, so he's had me try a million and a half things to fix my problem but nothing is working. I've done system restores, downloaded different virus detectors, changed settings on my laptop, deleted cookies and cache's. And I can't find anymore suggestions on Google.

Please help! :-/

I have an Inspiron E1505 and I use Firefox, if that helps. I don't use IE8, but I used the internet through that to see if it was just Firefox, but I was having the same problem.

hollyduh,

Did you try to Download Latest Java?

Are you using NoScript with Mozilla Firefox?

Do you have the current Flash Player instaled? Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer use different versions of Flash Player.

Adobe Test Shockwave and Flash Players

Did you try using IE Tab :: Firefox Add-ons ?

Are you using a hosts file? How about any programs like Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster or other programs?

hollyduh,

I find many people that use NoScript don't realize you have to right click on the icon at the bottom and allow scripting for the website you're on. If it's a website like YouTube, then I allow it to allow scripting. If it's a website I go to once, I allow it temporalily, that way if something happens, it keeps things to a minimun. Between using Mozilla Firefox and FREE Avast Home Edition along with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster and using a Hosts File, I feel fairly safe with surfing.

Can you get to the websites you wanted to?

My Java and Flash player are up to date.

That noscript thing made it so I couldn't view videos on YouTube, so I disabled it.

I had Spybot Search & Destroy installed the other day and it didn't find anything on my computer.

hollyduh,

Try start, control panel Internet options, advanced multimedia. Make sure everything is checked there except Always use clear type for html(you might not have this) and

show image download placeholders. Click apply, then ok. My Internet Options, Security is set for medium-hig and I am using the default settings.

Are you using a wireless router? The top link can be caused by some wireless routers using a list of some type. Had an issue with one of the virus protections, think it was Norton Internet Security, it was disabled and the problem went away.

The link I used to go to twitter, and it looks ok is...

https://twitter.com/

The second link, I still see, from time to time. Try refreshing the page and see what happens.

The power went out last night and when it does we have to turn off the router and turn it back on. I check my e-mail before I go online and I unchecked the box for "Always use clear type for html" that you told me. When I went to the sites I like, they are all working fine. Not sure which of those two things did it, but my internet is back to normal. Thanks so much!!

hollyduh,

The clear type is a setting that makes type look sharper and sometimes it really puts a strain to the eyes. It might have been the power cycle. Next time, try powering the router(s) off for 30 seconds and then turn everything back on. Restart your computer also, then try to connect.

Take care,
