This is never fun.

I'd try these solutions (in order) and see if your problem fixes itself.
This is also based on the assumption you're getting you IP address from the router and do not have a static IP configured.

1) Starting at the beginning (with no intent but being thorough) Check to make sure the wireless card is in fact turned on (I think it's Function F2 on your computer).

2) Check your network settings to make sure the connection has not been disabled somehow (weird but it can happen)

if it's ok then...

3)  Unplug the router, wait a minute, then plug it back in...wait another minute, then see if you can connect.

or if this doesn't work...

4) Right-click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adaptors > [find your wireless adaptor] then right-click on it and choose REMOVE.  Restart Windows and if the device is functioning properly Windows should find and automatically reinstall the software for you.

Also check to make sure another wireless device CAN connect to your router (could be a faulty router) and if so then indications as something amiss with your card.  In which case a call to Dell tech or purchasing a PCMCIA or USB wireless adaptor might be an option.

Hope this helps!:smileyhappy:

Hi Dianelcrn2,

You stated in your message above that you connected the 1100 directly to the DSL. Did you remember to turn off the DSL modem for 5+ minutes before trying to connect with your system? When you switch from your router being connected to another device being connected to the DSL you must make sure that it resets. Most of the time you do this by depowering the DSL modem for 5+ min for a reset and then connect it to the new device, in this case your 1100.

Gina's response could be the cause though I've gone back and forth with my Inspiron 6000 without having to turn the DSL off and wait. What she says though is correct at times but is most likely not the cause of your problem. These things can be quirky, though I'd think you'd have turned the laptop off or at least put it to sleep before you went to your daughter's house and then again when you returned in which case it's probably not a DSL issue because bringing the system back up when you reached both locations should have given you a valid internal IP.

When you first reconnected at home it was to your router right? Then you tried it directly to the DSL. The ip you got from ipconfig is a self assigned ip address and based on the message stating that "no Ethernet adapter local area connect Connection" means that even if the DSL modem were at fault, you should still at least get a valid IP from your router which you clearly are not. Did you do ipconfig/release_all and the ipconfig/renew? You also did not receive a valid DNS suffix which is the name assigned by your DSL provider.

I'd try all the suggestions but save the program downloading for right before you call Dell for service. (my preference for not downloading any extra software) Dells are great machines but even they have problems sometimes...Windows has a lot more problems but can usually be resolved less painfully than hardware replacement.

***I just thought of something else too. Some of these systems are or can be set to deactive the internal ethernet connection when running on battery. If this happens it will report what you saw with ipconfig /all. Could this be the problem?

The laptop connects now. What I did was reinstall Windows XP. My husband, who is not the computer literature one of the family suggested it and I said before I call Dell, might as well give it a try and low and behold it worked. Don't know why, never will. But I am happy to say the computer is internet accessible once again. Computers, gotta love em,but sometimes gotta get awful fustrated with them!!!!!!! Love my Mac,it doesn't give me the grief that my windows based computers do!!!

I've encountered the same problem.
Goto Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Run Internet Explorer (without add-ons)

If it works, now you need to goto Manage Add-ons and figure out which add-on is causing the problem.

Good Luck.
