Can't connect to Primary DNS Server

I have a Dell Inspiron 530

Computer has worked fine for the last year until 2 weeks ago and now can't connect to the internet.

Running Windows Vista on broadband and connected directly to modem by ethernet.  Internet provider has run tests and confirmed modem is fine and it is as my laptop works fine on it.

By re-booting the modem, the internet will work and you can type in a couple of sites and it seems okay but you can't do anything on a site, ie enter details and even if you don't try and enter anything, you can only view usually 2 sites and then it goes again.  However, the network icon shows as on and connected to the internet.

On diagnosis, it says that it cannot access the Primary DNS Server.

Do you have any idea how I can solve this or should I just completely re-install windows from the original set up disc?

If you open up a command prompt. In Vista , I think if you type CMD in search and click enter or ok...otherwise you have to find the run box like in XP. The coomand prompt will open... Type ping microsoft.com     do this when you are having the trouble.  If your BB Modem is just a modem and not a modem/router I would highly recommend getting a router. If it is just a modem everyone on the internet can see your pc. With a router you are protected by SPI and NAT. Sounds like your pc might be infected. Try starting in safe mode, restart your notebook when you see the Dell logo start taping the F8 key, select safe mode with networking. If the internet works fine now it most deffinately is a virus or a program. I just fixed someones pc that had something simular. It was xp and theyhave 5 people using the pc, they all installed a firewall...so that was 5 firewalls no one could get out.... so you may want to check what you have running at start up also.... in search or run type msconfig  then ok or enter , click on startup ...see what you have running...DO NOT go into services...you can lock yourself out of the system by turning off the wrong service.
