Can't connect to wireless network with windows 7

(Thanks Pudgyone, I read the "read this first " but didn't see solution)

My son just opened his Dell Inspiron 1545 with windows 7 64bit Christmas morning.Unfortunately it will not connect to our home wireless system

We have Verizon DSL with a Westell Versalink 327w router We have 2 desktops with XP and a laptop with Vista that effortlessly connect, but with windows 7 the network is identified, but can't connect.

A call to Dell technical service resulted in the report that my hardware is fine. A transfer to software support informed me that probably the router settings needed to be adjusted but to proceed would be $129. I am shocked that Dell can't help me for free on the first day that the computer is turned on, certainly disappointing my son on Christmas, and frustrating me.

I have the pdf manual for the router which is of no help. Westell.com tells me that verizon is responsible for support.

The verizon 24/7 support is "unavailable at this time" (oxymoronic). Microsoft informs me there will be a fee for a solution.

Can anybody help improve my son's Christmas, without a charge?

Thanks JT

I was able to contact a Verizon support person this morning

The Westell Versalink 327w router provided to me by Verizon in 2004, needed to be upgraded remotely by the service technician.

I now have full functionality with Windows 7

If there is a better place to post this for the benefit of others, please let me know, and I will

Thanks for posting this. I have a brand new (less than a month old) Inspiron N4010 that I cannot get online wirelessly at home. It went on at my brother's house. At least 5 other computers connect wirelessly. Our 2 desktops and 2 laser printers connect fine. The inspiron detects the wireless but will not connect. It will connect fine via the plug in (that's how i'm online now).

Soo annoying, but on the other hand i'm glad it's not an issue with the card like some folks have with 'n' networks.

I hate to call & bother the Fairpoint techs because a few months back we had things suddenly shut down internet wise and they were reasonably helpful (of course following the script, so my brother had to re-do all the things he'd already done to prove to them it didn't work!). They sent us a new router because ours is at least 10 years old. We haven't bothered to install it because the old westell was straightened out and working just fine.

So the debate. Do I call them & ask them to update the old router so it will work with this pain in the rear windows 7 junk? or do i just try to figure out how to install the new router (the brother doesn't live here... we just call him for all our computer problems!)

At least I know i don't need to call Dell about it!!!

Thanks!
