It would be helpful to know how you got to this state in the first place.  Has the network adapter ever worked or ever been detected?  Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the network adapter? Is the network adapter an integrated adapter (on the motherboard) or is it an add-in PCI card? Have you recently reinstalled Windows on this computer? Which version of Windows are you running?  Do any other devices show up in Device Manager as having a problem?  Since we are starting from scratch here, it would be useful to have as much information as you can provide.

Thanks Steve.........

this problem just started suddenly,,,,,i was on in the afternoon and went back on in the evening and the cable would not run. The cable company told me to call dell because there was no network adapters. I have tried to reinstall 2 drivers R48857\and R58370 which didnt seem to help. They said it is the NIC card that seems to have the problem. Im on windows XP and did reinstall it about 5 months ago when

I couldnt get online wit dialup with aol. I ddint have cable at the time. Aol said it was a dell problem and dell said it was an aol problem. So I reformatted the hard drive and the problem resolved itself. No other devices seem to have a problem....Hope this information helps........

If the ethernet adapter does not show up in Device Manager when you click on the + sign next to Network Adapters, then it could be that the integrated network adapter has gone bad.  A cheap troubleshooting step would be to install a PCI ethernet card and try connecting with that.  You should be able to find one for less tha $10 after rebates at places like CompUSA, BestBuy, Staples, OfficeMax, Ciruit City, etc.

Where do you see this listing of "Hidden devices".  I've never seen it in Device Manager on any of my computers.  Have you tried removing the device there and then seeing if Windows will redetect the network card on reboot.

Also note that if this is a hardware problem, there is no way that I, or anyone else will be able to solve it over the internet.  Someone has to physically install a new card.

The main problem is that the network adapter DOESNT show up at all in the device manager but it shows under view in hidden devices.....Im not handy with a computer so putting it in myself isnt going to work. Trying to get this problem resolved has been a nightmare.......Cant seem to find anyone that can resolve it over the computer

You will have to call Dell Tech Support to arrange service.  They are the only ones that can authorize a service call.

I have had exactly similar problem today. Resolved it by going into Bios and enabling the network interface card (it was disabled somehow after installation of XP home and a PCI USB/Firewire card. Back onto internet!

I am having same problems.  Can you explain what you mean by "going into Bios" to activate the card.  I'm hoping that will resolve my problem as well.

1. Start Dell as usual
2. When the Dell Dimension logo starts appearing, press/hold down the F2 key.
3. You will be presented with a screen showing the System Setup.
4. Scroll down to 'Integrated Devices' and select it using Enter key
5. You will be presented with another pop-up screen detailing the integrated devices.
6. There should be an entry for 'network interface card'. If it is disabled, enable it using the spacebar or +/- keys.
7. Press Esc to save and exit the setup. Allow the computer to boot normally.
8. Restart the computer and the network adapter (3Com 3C920 ethernet card) should now be listed under device manager and should work normally.

Thanks I appreciate your help.......but when i went to setup nowhere could i find Integrated devices. The main thing that started all this is there are no network adapters in my device manager. I so want to get this problem corrected. I have been told i may need a new NIC card. Will it repair the network adapters? Will a card work with no network adapters? I am so clueless and don't understand any of this  so if u could explain anything to help I would appreciate it. This all started all of a sudden when i went online and my cable connection didnt work....Ive been working on this for days,,,,,,,,im back to dialup,,,,,,,Why does that work??  thanks for helping me...

If you install a new network card, the system will recognize the new device and install it and/ or ask you for the CD continaing the software that comes with the card.

Dialup works because it is using a modem and not a network adapter.  I haven't read the entire thread but is this an integrated card or a PCI Card NIC?

Had a look at the Dimension 4500 specs. It looks as though the network adapter is a separate card in PCI1 slot. My tip worked for Dimension 8100 which has an integrated NIC.

Then as Chandas says, just remove the old NIC and replace it.  You should have to pay no more than about $15 for a good NIC.
