You don't say which model computer you have (each model will have different ways of turning on and off the wireless), so it makes it difficult to answer your question. If you have one of the newer laptop models, there is wireless switch on the side of the computer. If the switch is in the off position, you will see what you are obseving. On older models the Fn F2 key combination toggles the wireless adapter on and off.
